OMG! It's like they KNOW!

Anyway, I've been lucky enough to actually like and get along with most of my bosses, even the less than competent ones.

Most of my bosses have been like this...

The first real job I got out of High School was working at Christian book store. The boss said that he was praying for me because I listen to the devil's music (rock).... (Many of the older Lutheran hymns are reworded beer drinking songs... so the guy didn't have much credibility there.) He also used to tell me if I walked out on him, he'd "blackball" me and I'd never be able to get a job in this town again... The town being Seattle, he sure thought a lot of himself. Being the guy was an insufferable shit-ass and managed to drive off two of the more easy-going individuals I've ever met, it was my boss' [email protected] up attitude. If he actually tried to "blackball" me, not only is it a totally Unchristian thing to do, in Washington state the labor commission fines people that do that sort of thing... it is against the law.... Every time that was a problem, real or merely imagined, (mostly the latter), it was a point of contention or ridicule. Consequently I avoid specifically "Christian" businesses like the plague since that experience.

Today some 30+ years and many jobs later, the place I work for has no religious affiliation, but my boss is a fundamentalist Christian but he doesn't judge or get pissed or much of anything. Basically if you show up for work and get most stuff done that needs to get done he seems to be happy. He can sometimes be a little sparse on the details but being a journeyman operator I might know a little more about procedures than him. He lets me do my job and he informs me of any problems, I have never seen him get angry in the nearly two years I've been working for him. He looks at problems as things to be solved not points of contention or ridicule.

to be fair I've not had much of my imediate supervisor's um... management style... personally inflicted upon me.

I have however, witnessed her blame the victim of a client on staff assault for the assault, publicly in front of both staff and clients. before I was done leading the offending client away from the scene.

She's also accused staff of collectively breaking ... information policy... during a staff meeting. and when evidence was presented that there was a more likely non-staff related route for this information leakage. never offered an apology.

These are just two examples of her repeated demonstrations of character. This puts all management at my work place in a bad light since our immediate supervisor is the face management shows to us while the rest act like suits in their offices.

I want to say how much I appreciate their support... but I feel like I'm not coherent enough when it comes to speech. So I decide to buy Easter bunnies chocolate and write my feelings in a card.

I can express my gratitude much easier with words.

That's OK,
you won't be fired today.

I haven't particularly had any good or bad bosses. They have all been very professional and very unattached as I would expect in a work setting. However I do wish there was some kind of friend relationship which might make the long days bare-able.

The last guy I worked for was a complete tool; he treated me like a child and didn't even pay me sometimes.

I'm guessing that it was a cash in hand kind of job? o.o

Nah, weekly cheque. I don't remember how many times, but I've worked a few weeks for no pay.

So, for those who are in work, or those who have worked, have you ever had bad experiences with your boss/ex boss?

I can't stand mine, infact she has utterly no personality and is a procedure after procedure after procedure kind of person.

Ummmm... I dont know if i would start off a WORST BOSSES topic with such a weak post. I mean i think we are talking about bad bosses here. The true sign of a bad boss is low productivity, and bad leadership. Besides that your dislikes for their personality is just that. A simple dislike.

My point is that unless you are your own boss you will have plenty of them over the course of your life. You wont get along with them all and to be honest your not expected to. Everyone dreams of that ultra nice boss that is super informal and treats everyday like its casual friday. But people are all really different and you cant get along with everyone. When it comes the person signing your check the only thing you should be worried about is if they treat you like a human with rights and not like a slave.. and if they are productive... Meaning they actually do work themselves... and if they can keep the company functioning smoothly...

Besides that its all personal taste. Im sure your boss might be on a forum somewhere making a thread about WORST Employees and He/she is calling you out for being too friendly (yes there is such a thing) or too talkative and not productive or task focused.

I get along with my former bosses who were competent. There was one who had no clue how to do anything and just kissed everyone's ass and I could not stand him, even though he was a really nice guy. I'd rather work for a tough SOB who actually knows what he/she is doing.
