For best, probably studios like Ghibli, Madhouse, Bones, Production I.G., and early Gainax.

I'd even put Shaft, ufotable, and KyoAni there, and Trigger for personal reasons.

As for worst, that award goes to Idea Factory, hands down. Even if they're mainly a game company, they still made some of the worst anime you will ever see in your life. Even studios like Deen, Toei, Pierrot, and J.C. Staff has some good, even great work under their belt.

Best: P.A. Works, Madhouse
Worst: Toei, Pierrot (They used to be great, but now their quality sucks.)

Honorable mentions: ufotable, MAPPA, David Production, Wit Studio (Still kinda early since they only have a few titles under their belt.)

Best - Production I.G., Kyoto Animation, Madhouse, ufotable & MAPPA

Reasons why?

Production I.G. made Ghost in The Shell, Psycho-Pass and had their subsidiary company created Attack on Titan (as well as gorgeous sport shows like Kuroko no Basket and Haikyuu)

Kyoto Animation uses gorgeous, sharp colour palettes for most of their work like Hyoka, Amagi and recent favourite, Hibike! Euphonium

Madhouse is a pretty good studio, slightly overrated. I am more of a fan of their movies especially Paprika, Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, Summer Wars and Redline.

ufotable's work on Kara no Kyokai, Fate Zero and Fate Stay Night is good enough to be up there with the greats

MAPPA is my new entry favorites with Kids on the Slope, Terror in Resonance and Shingeki no Bahamut

All other studios are not as reliable to me but I guess studio Bones is one to look for every now and then

There's a lot a studios that I like for different reasons, so I'll try my best listing them off:

SoL-esque shows

PA Works - Their animation is lovely and their character designs are very good. The way they approach SoL is something that correlates well with me and the amount of quality they put in the visuals is amazing. Probably some of the best looking SoL shows around. They usually make some very good anime-originals so I always enjoy PA Works........................................... most of the time........

Diversity in Genres

JC Staff - No matter what the genre is, JC seems to usually always deliver in terms of animation and entertainment. They can tackle any type of genre and handle it well. I can always count on JC for having entertaining shows no matter the genre. Shows like Food Wars, Danmachi, and Prison School prove my point.

Madhouse - Probably the most consistent studio in quality, all across the board. There is a reason people were overjoyed when they heard that MH was adapting One Punch Man, that's because MH delivers. MH's animation quality is always good, they adapt stories very well, and they can take on so many different type of genres and handle them with ease. Much like JC, MH can handle any type of story or genre and go up and beyond what they were even suppose to do. MH is all around excellent and they are probably the best studio in the business.

Awesome Animation Quality

ufotable - ufotable by far makes some of the best 2D visuals I've ever seen, even their CGI is good. I respect ufotable's quality-over-quantity mindset because they can focus on just a few projects at a time and really deliver some spectacular looking visuals. Their titles are worth watching for the visual quality alone. KnK and Fate/Zero are all must watch titles.

Production IG - They also can produce some awesome looking titles. IG's shows are usually very well animated and have made some very good shows as well such as GitS, Psycho Pass, and Gargantia (well, it's worth watching for Chamber at least).

Excellent Style

Shaft - I was going to put them in the above category, but Shaft is so unique that they deserve their own category. Shaft is studio that I can always rely on for some obscure titles that pull in the viewer through their awesome visual flairs and effects such as head tilts, strange camera angles, strange coloring effects, etc. Shaft titles are worth just to watch for the visuals alone, very much like ufotable but for a different reason. Shaft titles aren't just visually good though, their animes are very entertaining and compelling. Their animes can have nice spins on certain genres like Monogatari, Nisekoi, Madoka, etc. and are always fun to watch. Shaft's odd nature definitely makes them stand out from the pack, but in a good way.

Trigger - Jeez, I almost forgot Trigger. From the creators of Gurren Lagann, Trigger has bombastic visuals, action, and dialog. Their titles have high adrenaline and are usually an absolute thrill to watch.

Up and Coming

All these studios are fairly new (Silver Link has been since 2007, as apposed to the other two), but they've all proven to be capable and I think there's some bright futures for these studios.

Silver Link - Creators of Fate/K, Kokoro Connect, and Yurikuma Arashi, SL has proven to be a pretty good studio. Their animation styles can vary so much from title to title, but they usually have a "shiny" type of look to their titles and it looks great.

Lerche - Pretty new studio with the recent success of Assassination Classroom, Lerche's animation quality I think is spectacular. Very detailed, but it has an interesting manga-type flair to it. They have also made titles like Carnival Phantasm which has a lot of respect from anime fans all across the board. They are making three titles this season: Monster Musume, School Live, and Laplace, and all of them are pretty damn good.

Mappa - They are pretty new too and came out of nowhere really, but each of their titles have all been pretty good. They can also do a wide variety of genres and they've had some good anime originals. I think they've more than proven themselves to produce some interesting titles. Their animation is good as well.

Worst Studios

Studio Deen - If you want a studio that will give disgraceful adaptations of a source material, call up Deen, they'll meet your expectations fully. Also, their animation quality is average at best. There is a few good titles they do though like Higurashi and Sankrea, but they're very far and few in between. Deen just can't seem to do titles right and always end up screwing it up in some way. They remind me of Lenny from Of Mice and Men; they have the right intentions and try to treat the puppy nicely, but they just can't help from strangling and killing it in the end.

Studio Arms - Horrible animation quality and probably even worse at adapting source materials than Deen (that's saying something). Elfen Lied was probably the best show they've ever made, but even then, they butchered that thing to pieces. If your favorite manga gets adapted by Arms, then throw in the towel while you can because you've already lost; it will be an absolutely terrible adaptation. I think Arms, is the worst studio in the business.

Toei Animation - I just don't think their animation quality is that good and I don't tend to like their titles besides Dragon Ball. I think they're a little outdated in this day and age

Pierrot - Sometimes Pierrot can be good, but their titles are usually littered with filler and unnecessary nonsense (I'm looking at you Naruto). And after what they did with Tokyo Ghoul, they more than deserve to be looked down upon as a questionable studio.

^ That was a nice and very informative read. Thanks Loomy.

My favorite anime studio is Shaft.
Their works are so unique that anyone can recognize them as Shaft titles just by watching for 5 seconds.

The worst is probably Studio Arms. They killed Wizard Barristers with that horrible episode 11.

Pretty sure the moment Deen lost all credibility was when they released the abomination called Pupa to the public.

Not really a studio fan/chaser and I hardly pay attention to who's doing what honestly but I guess KyoAni and Ghibli would be the closest ones to favorites I have as I tend to love their stuff and be blown away by their visuals. I recently been mesmerized by Hibike! Euphonium, simply gorgeous show. Clannad and Free are also tops for me visually and I really enjoyed the shows (Clannad being an all time favorite).

As for worst, I'll put in another vote for Toei because the shenanigans with Sailor Moon Crystal are inexcusable. Also whoever's doing Million Doll... yikes.

The ones I like, KyoAni, Shaft, Ghibli.... you know even reading through all these pages, its hard to pin down exactly my favorites...

the worst...

Well I had to look up who Idea Factory was, but quickly glancing through their titles I can see why they are hated....

Also.... Queen Bee... and yes I am aware of the fact they make hentai.... or try to. More like crap all over source material

My favorite studios would be Shaft and Kyoani. Shaft always has some sort of style to their work (Not counting the notorious headtilts). You always know it's them. I cannot imagine what Madoka would be like if it was handled by a different studio other than Shaft.

As for Kyoani, their ability to reel the viewer in through beautiful cinematography is their top selling point.

Another close favorite of mine would have to be David Productions. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's is currently one of their strongest works and it's just only the beginning. Their ability to completely stick to the source material and adapt Araki's art style deserves more praise. They show much dedication and pride to their work.

On the bottom of the barrel would be Studio Pierrot. At times their work shows a lot of inconsistency in art and story, especially when adapting source material.
