I don't understand the people who are threatening to cancel their accounts. Was Jojo's ever streamed on a legal anime stream before? I thought it wasn't because of all the characters named after Western bands.

I still don't believe this news since it's April Fool's, but I'd genuinely be happy if they're going to be streaming Stardust Crusaders.

No, and that's why people are threatening to cancel, because this is such a big deal, and something that shouldn't be joked about.

So much this. The shortness of the "announcement" worries me alot.

Jojo page still not available. I'm not convinced that this is real.

Definitely looks like an April's Fools joke. One quite in bad taste I'd add, seeing how Crunchyroll really flunked with licenses in Winter (especially here in the UK - seriously guys, why are you even partnering with those Wakanim good to nothings? They try charge us for what we would otherwise get from CR anyway since they use the same goddamn subs!). If this season they don't get at least one between Jojo, Captain Earth, One-week friends and Knights of Sidonia I might as well cancel my premium account.

By the way, if the reason why Jojo isn't licensed in the west is because of the characters named after bands, then it's a really silly reason. It's not like they're ripping off their songs. Robert Downey Jr. sported a Black Sabbath T-shirt in Avengers (because "Iron Man", get it? HURR DURR) and it's not like Ozzie Osbourne sued or something. It's called buzz, it's actually positive for said bands. How many people discovered Yes just because the ending titles of season 1 were their "Roundabout"?

It is a different service... You pay to buy a 1080p episode, not to 'rent', it's completely different than CR. Saying Wakanim is good to nothing just makes you look like a total retard, seriously. And it's Anime-Limited who provide the subs...

But hey, let's get back to the subject, shall we... Don't believe anything posted April 1st, just wait tomorrow. (Plus, it doesn't even appear in the line-up)

I'm not an expert in copyright law but I don't think wearing a Black Sabbath t-shirt in a movie where the band's song is already included in the OST and naming a character after Black Sabbath is the same thing. When the JJBA Part 3 Manga was translated to English many characters got their names changed like Vanilla Ice to Iced and now the Killer Queen Stand in JJBA All-Stars game has been renamed to something like Deadly Queen for the EU release not because of the band Queen, but somehow Katy Perry trademarked the Killer Queen name. Also, it's not just Jojo's. The main character in a new RPG game "Witch and the Hundred Knights" was actually named Metallica in the JP release and her name had to be changed to Metallia for release abroad. I think the problem is that the band names are copyrighted.

Actually, this happens pretty consistently when they add a new show. They'll make the announcement first and then put the show page together later.

If they really wanted to make it a good joke, they should have put the page up to really get people.

To be honest, I'm not sure if they're even allowed to joke about stuff like this... >.>

None, that I'm aware of. This would be the first time people would be able to watch it legally outside Japan. Season 1 and 2 are tame when it comes to musical references, so that wouldn't be a reason for them not to stream it.

Erm...

JoJo = Get Back
George Joestar = George Harrison
Erina = Eleanor Rigby
Dio Brando = Ronnie James Dio
Zeppeli = Led Zeppelin
Robert Edward O. Speedwagon = REO Speedwagon
Tonpetty = Tom Petty
Dire and Straizo = Dire Straights
Poco = Band of the same name
Lisa Lisa = Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam
Adams = Bryan Adams
Styx = Band of the same name
Doobie = The Doobie Brothers
Wang Chan = Wang Chung
Page, Jones, Plant and Bornnam = Led Zeppelin band members
Bruford = Bill Bruford
Tarkus = Band of the same name
Suzie Q = Suzi Quatro
Smokey Brown = Smokey Robinson
Loggins = Kenny Loggins
Messina = Jim Messina
Donovan = Donovan Philips Leitch
Wired Beck = Jeff Beck + Wired (his album)
Santana = Santana (the band) and/or Carlos Santana
Wham = Wham!
ACDC = AC/DC
Cars = The Cars

Subtlety ain't JoJo's strongest suit. Never was, even before the Stands started outright using names of musicians, bands and songs.

Except that's completely false. It's exactly because it's tied to Queen's song. Not because of a perfume label Katy Perry made BASED OFF THE SAME SONG NAME. Queen gets top priority. Not her.

I meant the more blatant musical references that would actually warrent some copywright issues. Pretty much all the names in Season 1 are vague enough where there shouldn't really be an issue as long as they use the official romanized pillar men names. Part 3 is alot worse and part 4 is a disaster, but I just wish they'd at least try.

I know how Wakanim works, thanks. The fact remains that if I missed some past episode and wanted to catch up I'd need to pay for shows that otherwise I'd have on Crunchyroll included in my subscription (e.g. Samumenco, Kill la Kill). Shows that CR licenses in countries other than UK, and for which Wakanim uses CR's subs (I'm pretty sure of this 'cos they told me themselves in their forum that was the case at least for Kill la Kill, which they've also been extraordinarily slow to update).

Yeah, I know it's not legally equivalent, sorry for that. I just think that it is one of the many things that are silly with copyright laws though. First, it's arguable that almost all band names are actually pre-existing words - AC/DC is a technical term in electricity, Wham is an onomatopoeia, Cars is... well, the plural of car, Zeppelin is a blimp, and so on. Second, the only problem imho would be to bother with contacting everyone and just asking them to agree, because honestly, how is having an anime character named after you going to ruin your reputation? Why would anyone refuse? And if someone did, you could always change the name in the subs, or use a different romanization. Third, and this is a more general criticism to copyright laws as a whole, it's really stupid because, as I said, buzz. I think this is more about avoiding potential trouble than actually having the certainty of being sued over something so silly (and I think a lawsuit could be won anyway). It's like that time they cut out the "Katyusha" song from Girls und Panzer. But it's stupid because laws like this hamper rather than protecting creative works. Not being able to broadcast what is fundamentally a traditional folk song because someone might have copyrighted it (without having contributed in any way to its composition, I'd add) is stupid. It's not CR's fault, I don't blame them for that, but that doesn't make it any less stupid.

EDIT: just to make the most blatant example - Dio Brando. "Brando" is from Marlon Brando, but it's a legitimate surname of Italian origin. "Dio" is an homage to Ronnie James Dio. Who of course borrowed the word, since that wasn't his real name, again, from Italian, where "Dio" means "God". So saying that the name Dio Brando is protected by copyright is like saying you're copyrighting the word God. Good luck with that - there's a couple major religions who'll disagree though.

Part 3 toned it down more compared to Parts 1 and 2, hence why it was the easier one to release for VIZ when it came to the manga. Mostly because there weren't as many characters popping up and the Stands were at least based off of tarot card signs.

But yeah, Parts 1 and 2 were definitely not subtle. Especially when you could easily piece together "Tonpetty" and Robert Edward O. Speedwagon. Never mind the manga flat out showing one of the Pillar Men named "ACDC" (the anime went with writing his name out as エシディシ, instead).
