So, I just finished up a big binge of OVAs, movies, specials and shorts. And I was wondering, which do you think is superior? TV shows from big time studios or smaller anime from indie studios?

For me, I'd have to say I prefer the TV shows. You get a chance to get more attached to a show and its characters the longer it goes on. Which is the primary reason for me. Plus, most times, production quality is superior because of bigger budgets.

Although, I do feel that small time animes tend to be more creative and buck the repetitive trends you see in mainstream anime.

What's your opinion?

Is this about TV versus OVA, or big budget versus indie? Because there are REALLY big gudget OVAs out there.

In either case I don't really care as long as I like the final product (Cencoroll, Kakurenbo, etc.).

Big Budget vs. Indie would be a more apt description.

OVAs are, IMO, a mix of movie and TV show elements. They're like TV shows because they're short, but similar to movies in that they only have a finite amount of time to capture our attention and give us something to remember.

I prefer TV shows because I grew up with them, and because I think it's fun to tell a story in a series of chunks. Even though, OVAs can be great, especially ones that are "stand-alones," or ones that aren't just "the extra episode."

Denpa Teki na Kanojo is an example. It's based off a series of light novels, and they only made two OVAs. But those OVAs were powerful.

I like them both for their different qualities. But I would have to say I like series more, especially longer series as I feel I get more from them. Though I do have many shorts that are my favorites that I would take over dozens of series.

I prefer OVAs, but that may be because the series that I love a lot have extremely high quality OVAs. Macross Plus is great quality, and a great OVA. My 3 favorite Gundams are all OVAs (08th MS, 0083, and 0080). Heck, I even prefer the new Hellsing OVA. And one of the longest running shows, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (which I love) was all OVA over a 9 year span ('88-'97).

As far as I've seen, OVAs are more like American Miniseries, higher budget, less time, more cinematic, and series are basically the same. Lower costs per episode, less cinematic. I guess it all depends on what you want. I like the length of 0083 and 08th MS and wouldn't want them longer. I also think that OVAs, not including LotGH, are long enough to make you like the characters without having to rely on filler.

In the end, it boils down to taste. I'd rather have the well plotted, well drawn, to the point OVA over a show. But I like both.
