I just pay attention to new shit coming out from favorite developers/publishers, then watch a few minutes of gameplay. If it's a new IP, I read a review or two.

Sometimes it's done based on skimming reviews of the game. But also sometimes... most of the time... I just buy them on a whim, like pretty pictures, certain genre I love, stuff like that.

Also surprisingly... or maybe not so? A lot of games I own are games based off other games, or use the same themes or something...

examples:
Assassins Creed, they have varying differences but the general gameplay is roughly the same.
Mario games after all these years are just the same game over and over (and still fun for me)
Pokemon
JRPG's a lot of these tend to use the same type of turn-based fighting style, but thats usually where the same things die off lol.

So quite a few of my games come from in a sense past experience with the games predecessors.

On experience with previous games by the same developer. The more popular ones make enjoyable games.

Also, to avoid most games adapted from books. I got the game of thrones game and so far it's been terrible.

Whether it's my thing and I'm more likely to buy a game on Sale or as part of a humble Bundle.

The universe and gameplay of the game.

I love the Halo series because of their sci-fi universe over their fairly generic shooting mechanic. The souls series makes for a good, challenging, solid action rpg with an excellent universe. Ni no kuni takes pokemon mixes it with final fantasy and has all the splendor that is miyazaki.

Most of these things do require a little reading up on here or there but sometimes you can just tell by looking at a trailer that this game is advertised at you.

For me it depends on what system.

I usually go by:

What the Gaming Community thinks about it. (Gamers)
Actual in game footage
Strong MP for extended replay value
Long or enjoyable SP. Some short campaigns can be entertaining.
What studio/publisher is behind it.
Word of mouth by local and online friends.
Sometimes what Genre it is.

Sometimes a sale on a certain game can gain interest.

I put the least amount of stock in game reviewers, and their review.

Mostly from gameplay footage I can find on youtube or scattered around the internet, since my collection includes alot of the niche JRPGs that any big site will likely crap all over because it isn't Call of Duty or the next big shooter.

Some stuff I'll buy off name, like the Final Fantasy series (I'll say it, I enjoyed all of the 13 series).

And every now and then I do blind buys of RPGs, sometimes they work out , but of course sometimes you find a dud.

I watch gameplay and read reviews, and if it still appeals to me then I buy it.

First and foremost, I look at genre and synopsis to determine if it is aligned with my personal preferences.
Then onto reviews, chats with others who have played it, watching game play and of course I am more inclined to buy games from developers I know of and series I've previously enjoyed.

I typically buy games from the same developers, Square Enix, Bethesda, Capcom(sometimes they suck tho), Epic Games, Valve, Ubisoft. Also i only need to see like 2 minutes of actual gameplay and i know weather or not it sucks. I only check reviews to judge wether or not ill come back to the game again and again.

Recommendations from friends, watching gameplay vids, reading the games synopsis, and usually by who made the game.. like Bungie, or Bandai Namco.. etc..

Im too poor to just say fuck it and spend money on a game i know nothing about and probably end up hating it.

1. What will I walk away with when I finish this game? Wisdom? Heartache? An attachment to fictional offspring?
2. Does it look like I'd recommend this to a friend?
3. Is it on the DS? ;-; I have no other consoles.
