My parents spanked me to become a good child. Now, I'm their slave.

Spanking can teach kids that once you run out of patience, use violence. But it’s not the job of parents to become their kids best friend either.

That is such complete and utter nonsense. I was spanked as a child, whacked when I talked back and a few times when I was really bad, belted and I most certainly did not grow up to use violence. On top of that I got a good talking to, was punished/grounded, and had something I really wanted taken away from me. My mother took no crap from me.

I think children do need spanking and beatings when they deserve it. Words alone just will not work for some children, and they need to be kept in check and trained. In the old days, kids were whipped with actual whips, and they did not grow up traumatized. They were punished when they deserved it; when they didn't, they were left alone.

There is a huge difference between spanking your child and abusing your child. Society is so afraid of their children that they let them do what they want, which is exactly why many of today's children are what they are - complete and utter brats who are overgrown and spoiled for their age.

Parents are the boss. They rule the roost, they are the dictator. Sure, love your kids and be their friend - but at the end of the day, the parent is the ruler of their kingdom, and they should give tough love, and be the parent more than the friend.

I like how it said on my "General Discussion" section:

What's on your mind right now?
Spanking

In that order XD

Well, I think that it is stupid and not cool.

Well since it's illegal I would say no. It wouldn't probably teach them a lesson though, it did me. Don't want them learning that's it ok to hit people though I guess.

This is complete utter crap. I was spanked when I was a kid as well, but that did not shape me into the person I am today. The ones that say that this is "necessary" are ignorant of the real reason why kids act like this. It isn't because these kids are "naturally" evil or do bad things, it's about what environment you were raised in and how society treated you as you grew up.
I myself had a cousin that did really bad things (almost burned up a building, stole etc.) So I was affected by him and started to become more and more alike him, that was why I became a "bad kid" that "deserved" spanking...
But when I decided to turn my interest elsewhere, like my school friends, I began developing another "personality" so-to-say and that changed me into someone that didn't do the bad things that I did with my cousin.

So what you are saying about "giving them a lesson" by spanking them is wrong, it does not help get point across, you might be able to teach them that they are doing something bad, but not why they are doing it in the first place, which is what should be fixed.

Wow, so many prejudices and misinformation in this one thread. There's been no proof via psychological studies in the past 40 years that spanking causes violence, depression, or any other mental disturbance. "Spanking causes children to become violent." "Spanking causes your children's IQ to drop." Where are you getting this information, and what medical journal was your source reading when they posted that on the internet?

Spanking is just like any other negative "reward." If it's used in excess, it loses its meaning and just becomes abuse. Spanking is meant to be used as a form of conditioning, which has been proven to work on children. The way to use spanking is to calmly explain to the child what they did wrong in a means that they can understand, then spank them to show that there are consequences to their actions (even if not immediate).

Grabbing the child as soon as they do wrong and spanking them does nothing, because depending on the age of the child they may not even connect their action to the spanking. Explaining to the child what they did wrong after the fact is also rather useless since children tend to block out outside stimuli when they're in pain (don't we all?). Yet this is often done by the parents due to their anger or fear, and that's why it's frowned upon in society.

As for spanking being illegal? It's not a national law. You would have to look at individual state laws to determine if spanking is illegal or not. You can check http://kidjacked.com/legal/spanking_law.asp to see if spanking is illegal in your state and how severe the punishment.

I was spanked (not often) as a child and was polite and friendly in school. I know other kids who were spanked who were still hell raising assholes. I think it's all about how you do it. My dad made sure I knew why I was getting spanked. He never did it out of reflex anger. He'd have me say "I'm getting spanked 3 times because I said ""Shit"" at school," and would then spank me hard enough to leave a red mark. I still say "shit" today but I didn't for a good part of my life so I'd say it mostly worked. OH, but guess what word I still don't say around my dad?

Harming your child is yes. Goes under child abuse.
