I believe in spanking. It has worked with me and my other siblings.

Hmm. I wonder why several parents (including mine) aren't in jail then..? I was spanked and even whooped on the butt with a belt whenever I misbehaved. Hell, I have a 5 year old brother who has acted out of line (he still does, but it's gotten better) even though my parents favor words over physical punishment. Though does that mean they don't use physical punishment ever? Not at all. I've witnessed it first hand. He has definitely changed from a rotten spoiled brat into a good kid.

Yes, spanking should only be allowed when it's enjoyed by the receiver and giver! ;D

*On a more serious note, it really depends. I was spanked as a child, and it never gave me any emotional trauma. At the time, maybe. But it helped discipline wise, too. But everyone is different, and I think we should probably be more careful with this.

When i was a kid i got in trouble a ton and no matter how many times my parents spanked me it never got through to me so obviously it was not that effective. What really worked though was taking away my gameboy.

Well, I'd say as long as your child isn't a masochist, spanking is a good idea. It worked on me when I was younger until I had something for my parents to take away from me.

I'd say it depends on how hard, what the situation is, what your relation to the child is (smacking kids that aren't yours will get you into a world of trouble), and what the child is like. For some kids I guess it will work, but anyone who thinks it's as simple as 'it worked for me so it should be fine to be used on all other kids' is a small minded arse with the I.Q. of a piece of dirt.

Any form of violence is not okay, except in the most extreme of situations.

It honestly depends on how your child behaves. If you have literally tried everything you can in order to stop your child from misbehaving, then resorting to spanking is probably your best bet. You can only go so far w/o physical punishment after all...

It does all depend on the child and the situation.

Everyone has their own way of parenting and for most parents that do spank there kids they aren't child abusers.

Well, Muur doesn't seem to think so. Apparently, spanking your child is child abuse. The ignorance is strong I tell ya.

Well, she probably has never been spanked and probably has never had friends that have been spanked; because of this she has a mental picture of the parents slapping the child's bottom as hard as they can with intense anger leaving the child with immense pain. Which actuality doesn't happen with responsible parents that spank their children. They smack the child's bottom with just a little bit of force to cause a tiny amount of pain or discomfort. My parents only spanked me a couple of times and it never actually cause me any pain. Most of the time I would take that punishment over sitting at the table for an hour because I wouldn't eat my vegetables.

Pretty sure there is already a thread related to this.
No opinion.
