What's so special about Kill la Kill, Attack on Titan, or the next "big" anime. People like to hype things to the point that the hype actually kills the experience for first time viewers.

If you Have not seen Neon Genesis Evanagelion.... DO IT. I don't care how but do it. And end of Evangelion to get the complete experience. Then Consider the movies after that(just started watch those). There is a reason this show is talked about as much as it is. Bebop, Gundam(any of them but UC ones would probably be the best) and NGE are kind of YOU MUST HAVE SEEN IT shows.

AoT was a season favourite for me. but it didn't blow me away the RWBY did. and even RWBY cannot manage the ... Paradigm shift that I experienced watching Evangelion.

Back in 1998 when the last of the VHS were being release by ADV... it was something I hadn't seen before and something that coincided with my shift from 'sometimes watcher of anime' to 'Drooling Otaku'.

Can it take credit for that? I don't know. i was mightily moved by the El Hazard OVA at the same time. And Blue Seed, and just about any Anime that my rental store carried for which I saw the previews on every tape I rented. (I bought EVA though and have rewatched those original video tapes to death... their death)

some of what EVA did has become so common and well used as to be stale. but back then it was NEW. For it's time, the animation was superb and the robot battles and the off the battle field mysteries were THE topic of discussion between fans every time a new tape came out. heck getting that new tape was a fricking race to the store on the day it was expected. (and you hoped the rental employee who was also a fan wasn't working that day)

Evangelion may not have aged well. but nothing for me has ever matched the resulting fan excitement, the addiction to a show nor the expanding amount of fan conversation it generated. Even as late as 2004 My Eva cosplay was instantly recognized and hardly unique. Two fans totally unknown to each other meet in a hallway. 'Major <adusts glasses>" , "commander <adjusts shoulder holster>" (after getting around the corner from each other both cosplayers giggle to themselves loud enough for the other to hear and return an out of character thumbs up)

Eva is pretty much the only show I ever bought merchandise for... (well there's my NOIR pencil board and some totally random wall scrolls I got cheap)

I'm sure in part, it is a special circumstance of place and time. but the show had SOMETHING going for it. or it wouldn't be so magical to so many people that the remake could also make fortune. (although I myself mysteriously enough, never could seem to be bothered)

It's weird taking part in these 2 mirrored threads, still.

Papago; does the sleazy (my word) merchandising of the last decade or so in any way compromise your appreciation of the show, or does it change it at all?

ummm... probably not at all. I haven't paid much attention in the last decade. some merch has triggered a 'i want that' or an 'Really? seriously?' response but... I don't typically buy merch that fact that I HAVE Evangelion merchandise (mostly bought at conventions and bought as much as a souveineer of the convention as for any other reason) says a lot about how much the show impacted me. But... hmm.. while I remember how much the show affected me. i'm not sure I'm that hyped by it anymore. While it may seem here and on the other thread that I'm defending it at every turn. I feel more like lukewarm centrist trying to instill reason to the extremists.

I honestly haven't noticed the Merchandise enough to even realize it's turned sleazy... what there's naked Asuka Hug pillows or something. (Won't be canon unless her eyes are closed) out there?
---

hmmm.. now that i think of it. no.

the merchandizing of all anime is so over the top and so uninteresting to me and SO universal to all anime. and SO despised by many who might like an anime. (there are plenty of Saber Fans who bitch constantly about her figures) so... no... it's like it's separate thing and not unique to Eva.

Although I have a cop rei and Nurse rei in my figures collection. I bought the cop one because I'm also a big fan of You're Under Arrest. .. It WAS mildly disturbing to note when I pulled her out of her package that that she was HAND CUFFED to a STOP SIGN.. but... whatever The japanese are pervs... or something...

I got a Nurse Rei that I really like not so that I can peek up her dress. I have a couple of (longer hemmed) nearly identical uniforms and never felt the need to put a mirror on the floor and look down. But because I am a nurse and have always taken advantage of her Rorsach blot nature to identify with her rather than the shinji of my self hate.

I like Evangelion but I'm not as crazy about it as I used to be.
What I think is special about it is not necessarily the show itself but rather it's influence on anime and mecha. Anyway whether or not you like the show you can't deny the impact its had on the anime industry.

Anatomically correct anime barbies marketed to men. It's a lil' different.

Better them than me? But seriously since I don't consider that unique to one show or company it doesn't impact my liking for Eva except as a consequence of how it impacts my liking for anime in general.

This is has been mentioned before but EVA is a deconstruction of 90s mecha anime(this genre was insanely popular back then) tropes with some crazy mind f^ckery, and budgeting issues. Do i think its a good show? Yes, I watched it back in the 90s and it blew me away. Is it still relevant today? Not likely, maybe only out of respect for it's importance to anime and the mecha genre. Is it that important to the genre? Absolutley, Eva and other 90s anime (ie; Trigun, Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, Vision of Escaflowne) have had a huge impact on anime even today. Many of these shows are the origins of the tropes we see in anime today, some have been done better by the shows that succeeded them, some have become tired and forced. But these shows were groundbreaking in their day.

I personally like the series a lot, but it pales in comparison to Revolutionary Girl Utena for me at least. Now that's a mindfuck classic. And that movie...

You just have to like these sort of shows. Or you have to pretend to like them because of their legacy and impact on anime - the same way literary snobs pretend to love dry, classic books for the sole fact that they think it makes them sound "intelligent" and "well read".

NGE broke a lot of stereotypical molds when it was released, it is filled with imagery and symbolism chock full in every episode, and of course the ending to the anime (Congratulations!) and the entire movie itself just further made it an anime classic for better or worse. And well, you know - that infamous scene.

Shinji, jacking off to comatose girls is not normal. No. Just no.

Is it as brilliant and amazing as some say? For me no. But like I said, I still like the series a lot - love it even, and for me it is an absolute classic. And let's be honest: many of the things featured in today's anime all stem from NGE. This series contributed a lot to many shows and it does deserve recognition for that.

And yes, I am one of those people who like Shinji. I find him very realistically flawed to how the majority of people would act in that situation. He's one of the most realistic characters in an anime series, but people complain because they want an all brave hero. But of course when they get that, then they complain that the hero is not realistic. There's just no winning with some people.

Anyway, you should just watch what you want regardless of what the anime snobs think, or how much legacy a series has.

GOD, I HATE YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT STATEMENT I CAN'T EVEN -

Just kidding. I too dislike Code Geass a lot. A lot. Especially Lelouch that anorexic little bastard.

NGE brought a lot to the table, paving the way for a lot of future anime. I think the "masterpiece" part is concerning the psychological aspects, even though they screwed the pooch with the finale. The reason people call it bad is because it keeps getting hyped up, there's a lot of anime now that use what NGE introduced so newer mecha fans don't recognize NGE as being unique.

It does get hyped too much, but it'll always be one of the building blocks that made anime what it is today.

I like Evangelion that's because I'm a big fan of mecha series. It's an old anime but it's also very cool.
