You have to back them up! it's a must. You never know when your PC fails or when your PC would get hit by a virus, water/coffee and etc.

So yeah, I do back up only the files... programs.. not as much...

raid 1 + external hard disk + dvd burning.
i get my first data lost when i m still in 10++,i cried my heart out at the time,my save game,my screen shot.i promise myself i wont let that happen again,to me,or my family.but ,actually the most effective method is actually burning it on a disc.as should someone store their disc safely,it can survive a long time, and yes i mean more than a decade,i still got my old D1 savegame from 99.and i also change my hard disk, even if its still working every 2 year . when u got the time, looking through the content of your old backup is like going down memory lane, all your old pic,the music u love so much / use much effort to obtain last time, that special anime with some obscure dubbing, the incomplete/completed project/artwork that u have work on last time with so much hope on it...... nostalgic.

I take good care of my machines, I've never had a need since nothing has ever died on me in my lifetime. Also my personal files fit on a 16 GB USB Flash Drive. I have about 50 GB of media but losing it wouldn't be a big deal to me plus a lot of it is on my laptop as well.

I actually keep all of my important files on box.com with the sync client I save everything that I would care about if my computer went down on it.

I have nothing important, so I see no reason to backup my computer. well I do have several USB's, but I don't even use them, so they are just lying there.

Hell yeah. I work in IT and have learned both through my seniors' wisdom and the hard way that backing up your files, at least the important ones, is essential. I've filled up one 500GB, one 1TB (1,000GB) and half of another 1TB external drive. They all contain my photographs I've taken, videos I've made, and several hundred gigabytes of movies, anime, and music. Then I have a 64GB flash drive that I keep on my person at all times with my personal docs on it.

Rule of thumb for professionals, graphic designers, IT pros: Backup, backup the backup, then back it up again.
Rule of thumb for consumers: 1 backup is good, 2 is paranoid, 3 is the way to go. No joke. Hope this helps for anyone interested.

Can you directly connect your PC to your particular mini server via USB, FireWire, etc? Also, go into Windows Update and turn off your automatic updates. You can always turn this back on the same way you turn it off. This way your PC won't restart itself due to updates. And in power options you can set your PC to never turn off the hard disk, even if your PC goes to sleep. Hope you can get it all backed up, mate! :D-Mikael

I honestly don't know I'd have to check, but as far as I know I don't think I can. Thanks for the Windows update advice though, I'll start that up when I try to get it working again. It's certainly a big faff, but then most technology stuff is where I'm concerned. I hope I get it sorted, too. Thanks.

yes after going to school to become a network administrator I back up my laptop every week, I do a incremental back up since it's my computer and really only a few things change. I have a full back up on a separate external hard drive. on my gaming pc though I'm running a RAID 0 so if a SSD fails, I'm screwed but most of the games I play, data is stored on a server so it's all good.

Anytime, man. It is a big faff. I wish Microsoft would automatically disable updates upon installation so we don't have to restart incessantly. Peace, mate!-Mikael

Hey, noticed you're a net admin. Is it a fun job? I'm a networking student so just curious. Thanks!-Mikael

haha I wish I could, I just can't afford it really, I don't have the money for external drives, I would love to get a time machine hooked up to my mac, my only question is, if theres multiple people connecting to the time machine can they see your files on there? I have a few main things on a flash drive but thats about it. I'll just have to be smart and not download anything stupid, ever and hope my mac holds up for a good couple of years to come

I'm actually going to focus more on security part of it, I already have my sec +, A+ and MTA and am working on cisco. I want to get the CEH as well.

I haven't got the job yet but I'm aiming to get one within the next month, I have about 2 weeks left before I'm done with my school, they really hammer it to you the importance of back ups.

how far have you gotten in school? also are you working with servers? (I've been using 2008 R2)
