The thread title pretty much says it all. I try to watch the first episode, but I get French subtitles. Checking the list of available subtitles, I only see French and Spanish; no English.

I don't have any issues with subtitles on other series.

According to the announcement, the series is only available in the following regions:

France and DOM/TOM, Belgium, Switzerland, Andorra, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Canada (French-speaking), Italy, Spain, Portugal, Bahrain, Cyprus, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Egypt, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Libya, Mauritania, Somalia, and Sudan.

So maybe the assumption is that French and Spanish are common enough in those countries that those subtitle options are sufficient to reach the majority of viewers.

If it really is by design, which I very much doubt, it would be ridiculous. Most Dutch people can't get further than 'je ne parle pas francais' and don't know a lick of Spanish. As far as I'm aware, those languages aren't very well-known in at least Switzerland, Italy, Iran and Iraq either, and probably a lot more countries from the list as well.

As eyeofpain suggests, I do believe that is intentional. The English language rights probably went along with the US (and maybe some other regions) rights. I'm in the US and I can't watch the show at all on CR, but I can watch it, in English, on Funimation.

I agree with you, it sounds ridiculous that only French and Spanish are available, even thought at least half of those listed countries doesn't have it as their official language. English should really be available, it's the main international language after all. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that CR could secure it, but it's ridiculous to expect your customers to learn another language just to watch a show. Than we are actually better of learning Japanese instead...

Note however that Switzerland has French as one of it's official languages. It's a multilingual country just like here in Belgium. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean that all residents in those countries are able to understand French. I'm lucky that I know a bit French, but I'm not as fluent in it as in English.

Looked it up on Wikipedia, Switzerland has 20% native French speakers (as opposed to Belgium's ~50%). 50% seems to have some grasp of the language (probably comparable to your French skills). In comparison, 64% has German as NATIVE LANGUAGE (so not counting secondary language knowledge), and 61% can speak English as secondary language.

If it really was the intention to only target people who speak French, they should've said so at the announcement. I feel a bit deceived reading an English announcement on an English site that promises a translated stream, and then not getting an English-subtitled stream.

While it does seem deceitful, the fact that French-speakers were singled out for the Canada region, and lack of UK/Australia or other English-only regions, should have been taken as a hint.

Regional licensing often doesn't make sense in our connected world, but CR does the best they can with what is made available to them. English subtitles may show up later for this series, so I would keep an eye on the News section and keep your fingers crossed.

Crunchyroll can't stream it with English subtitles and it's not Crunchyroll's fault. It's because of the way FUNimation licensed it. I'm in the US, so I can't watch it on Crunchyroll in any language, and since I don't really care for FUNimation's site, I probably just won't watch this series.

I think it was a rather foolish move on FUNimation's part to try to monopolize it. By restricting access so much, they're only helping the illegal sites get stronger. There have been a few other series with the same restrictions this season, like DAIMIDALER, which I kinda wanted to see.
