For awhile, I was conflicted about what to think of closet otakus; however, I've come to the conclusion that the mere concept of closet otakus is incredibly offensive. I take offense to the idea because it intrinsically has the implication that the anime culture is socially unacceptable. If you're going to be a part of the community, you might as well not go through great lengths to hide it. Watching anime and being a part of the community is not worthy of being one of you "deep, dark secrets," because it honestly is not a big deal.

People who will socially condemn you for having different interests than them is not someone that you should be concerned about appeasing to begin with. Maybe I'm just not as concerned about being socially ostracized as other people are. Perhaps my avid misanthropy influences the way I view social situations in general.

What's your take on "closet otakus"?

It depends upon the kind of anime you're watching.

Well I for one, am a closet otaku.

I just dont feel the need to tell anybody that I watch Japanese cartoons, so i keep it to myself :).

I keep up appearances at school and even if I hear someone talking about anime I ignore or feign ignorance. (my family and even my close friends dont know i watch anime lol)

Its just my choice. Im not 'addicted' to anime or crazy for it like alot of people, I just watch a few episodes a day because I like it as an entertainment medium. And I feel no desire to buy any anime related merchandise, I just like to watch anime, and I keep it to myself lol.

Doesnt help in the fact that I am a huge hypocrite and I hate most people who talk about anime in my small town school. Literally the only people I know that openly admit to watching anime are about 4 really strange, annoying girls. Im just another one of the 'guys' im 17, I play on the hockey team and party and shit like the average highschooler. I just keep this hobby to myself and im fine with doing so.

And yes, I do think people will judge me if I constantly berate them with talk about how anime is the most amazing thing ever. I find alot of anime fans to be over the top and annoying, but that is the only kind of anime watchers i have met in my life. MAYBE I could just admit to liking anime. But your right, I am afraid of being judged and so there is that aspect.

I dont seek out people who watch anime, and people dont know i watch anime, I think its fine to keep it that way.

Well, when you're like me and have entirely eradicated your social life, you'll find excessive amounts of time to squander. With my excessive amount of time, I worry about and ponder seemingly unimportant things.

I suppose it's different from person to person. I am open about my hobby, but I don't insessantly berate my schoolmates with talk about how anime is the most amazing thing ever. Most of the people who do that are incredibly annoying people who I don't associate with. Those people tend to be annoying elitists who act as if they're more intellectual, profound and interesting because they've found "the existential meaning of Evangelion" (i.e. my ex-boyfriend).

I usually don't talk about anime at school, but if another normal person wants a recommendation or a casual conversation about a series, I don't mind partaking in the conversation. I'm not embarrassed of it, but I don't act as if I'm some divine, omnipotent being because I know about anime. My activity/advisory period in school is a combination of the video games and debate club, and they constantly talk about anime, and it honestly agitates me a bit. I suppose that is to be expected when you're in a class of twenty-five sixteen or seventeen year old boys, but I still don't understand why they have to be so obnoxious about their hobby. I rarely partake in their conversation because of how obnoxious I tend to find them, and I really don't need to prove my knowledge in anime. Maybe it also has something to do with the fact that I rarely talk in school to begin with. Who knows.

But then again, I am the sort of person who buys anime merchandise and I have no problem with pulling an all-nighter occasionally and marathoning fifty episodes. These all-nighters are definitely more frequent in the summer. I don't want to call myself a "hardcore" fan, but I'm not a casual watcher. I suppose you could say that I casually watch anime during the school week, but other than that, I make anime watching/manga reading a priority. To reiterate, it varies for person to person, and at least you have an established cause for not being entirely open about your hobby.

Yeah, I'm more of a closet otaku? I don't talk about anime very much or tell many people I am a fan. Most of my friends have other interests and it would not be fair to them to inflict my interests upon them. We can talk about politics, or music, or cooking instead, and that is totally fine. Besides, I am not really an 'anime fan' anyway. I like anime because I like stories, and it is just another way of telling them. I'd never buy merchandise or anything. I don't think I count as an otaku (however we're defining that). I feel like if I tell people that I like anime I will be cast into a group I actually don't have that much in common with. There are probably a lot of people like me. Anyway, if we're going to divide up the nerds, I'll be with the Whovians.

I watch anime, I have all my life. It's something I've grown up with... However I don't consider myself an otaku.

I think it's really sad that people must hide their interests just because they try to fit in :/
Personally I used to not talk about my anime interests, just because I had no one to talk to about them on a deep level until highschool.
But I can see where "Closet otakus" come from, they try to fit in and feel like displaying their otakuish interests will jeopardize them.
(I have a few friends that are closet otakus)

As for me while worry about something that unimportant just relax and do what makes you happy :p
