I'm using a pair of $10 head phones that have lasted about seven months, thus far. My last pair, also cheap, lasted three years or so until some wires yanked out of place. I have a back-up pair that I used to often use (cheap), which is going on seven years-old. No, my headphones aren't a waste of money.

I have a pair of headphones that've lasted me for three or so years, and another that've lasted me for at least five. It really depends on what you get. Granted, I've had a pair of $50 earbuds break on me after two years, but only very light use (barely triple digits, most of the time they were in the carrying case).

However, if it's the wires you're worried about breaking, there are headphones with a jack on the speakers themselves (as in, you plug into the headphones AND the source). These if the cable breaks, you can just buy another 3.5mm cable with jacks on both ends and you're set. Costs like two bucks for the cable.

Last I recall, Monoprice had some like that for 25 bucks. By all reviews I've seen, they were amazing for that price. I had a friend with some more expensive JVC/Victors that did the same.

I have in three years went through three sets of headphones, and every time I ruin a set I go back and by the same one over and over again. I think they are called the Coby 2-In-1 on Ebay. It comes with a headband still and a earbud style for around $30s and they are such good quality and so comfortable. And they only break out of my own stupidity. It's all about finding what you like I guess, personally these do the trick for me and I just can't imagine using any other headphones.

Here is a link to them:

Not sure if links are allowed but I think in this situation they should be fine.

I've had no issues with my AKG 240s, but then they aren't particularly portable, though I used to bring them to and from work. The parts are replaceable, and the cable is detachable. I've run the cable over numerous times with chairs though and never had an issue.

Portable headphones are a bit more difficult I guess. I enjoy my Audio Technica ES-88s, but I do worry about the non-replaceable wire so I baby them.

On the other hand, I've heard these are good headphones and apparently indestructible (also parts are replaceable): http://www.head-fi.org/products/sennheiser-hd-25-1-ii-professional-headphone
