Its more like a time-warp citizen ... US in 2011 Spring was 13 new series (when Austria had 6), so far Austria is 12 new series, one on short-term availability, and its conceivable that more will come. So its like being at Crunchyroll in the US after it had been running for about two years.

The question is, how to make sure that Crunchyroll access in the German Language European region grows in the future in the same way that access has grown over the past three years in the U.S.

Cutting price based on lower availability would be self-defeating. Everyone only pays for what they can see, so cutting the price based on series per country would mean that licensors that include Germany & Austria would get less revenue, and there would be less reason that more licensors would add that license region.

Another way to look at it is that Crunchyroll Latin America is just over a year old, with access in Spring 2013 down to below 50% of US access, and so far this season, is around 87% of US access (for premium members, 74% free). So the strategy of pursuing local subtitle language rights has been pretty successful in Latin America, and so there is at least reason to hope that the same strategy might work in the German Language European region.

Its seems likely that whole section at the back: France and DOM/TOM, Belgium, Switzerland, Andorra, Luxembourg, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, given the way that the contract was likely composed, with amendments typically attached to the end of the list.

Surely Belgium, though. I was puzzled previously by the sudden jump in Luxemburg rights, but looking back, it seems that Showgate includes Luxemburg in its French language region of french language rights to France and French overseas dominions and territories, Belgium, Luxemburg, Francophone Switzerland, Andorra, Algeria, Tunisia & Morrocco, which is slightly different from some other licensors French language region.

I will double check that tomorrow when it airs, when the countries under the half year delay will be clear in the media restrictions to the RSS feed.

Sigh, why doesn't this surprise me. Anyway, thanks for letting me know, Agila.

I still don't get it why all those countries are included in the "French-speak territories" by most distributors. Some of those don't even have French as on of their official languages at all. It's maybe true that some multilingual countries have a great foundation to be treated as French-speak countries. Nevertheless, I think it's a really poor principle to stigmatise those countries in this way.

It seems clear that Switzerland is not just included in many French language licenses, but also included in many German language licenses, so it seems likely that a Swiss member that clicks their language at the bottom of the page on Français sees one list of series and if they click their language on Deutsch they get a slightly different list, and if they click on English they may even get a third list.

For smaller language markets ~ Catalan, Luxembourgish, Dutch, Romansh ~ there is not an active market for subtitled simulcast anime, so they get lumped in with neighboring larger countries. Because France is one of the larger overseas anime markets (and an even larger manga market), the French language region has a tendency to accumulate neighboring countries where French is either among the official languages or a common second language, on the basis of "a little extra market for some possible licensees in the market, at no loss to us".

And if they are licensing five titles, and only two of them end up having the extra countries actually being used ... well, that's still extra revenue for no extra trouble on their part, since things like material delivery and subtitle approvals are all identical.

Adding to confusion, lots of licensors group countries together to cut down on contracting cost, but there is no single agreed on grouping, so we have seen that Showgate has a "French Language" region, and a "rest of the Arab League" region, with Algeria, Tunisia & Morocco seeming to be in the "French Language countries", and Libya in the "rest of the Arab league" countries. But other companies seem to include all four main countries of the Maghreb in a single region. Those kinds of things might just be a historical accident, with, for instance, some French distributor finding a market in Moroccan, Tunisian and Algerian TV for an anime series at a time that the Libyan market was not as receptive.

Oh God, thank you so much CR! You guys just made my day by getting Black Bullet. Now there's nothing else I'd ask for, apart from Mekaku City Actors since I've been hyping over the series for over a year now.

Fortunately, Mekaku City Actors is a sure thing, as Aniplex has already confirmed CR will be streaming it:
