I give it a few episodes to hook me. If I'm not interested at that point I start skipping them.

I watch the first episode of a anime, then put it on hold for weeks or months. Since i kinda know what to expect of it after 1 ep, i pick it up again when i'm in the mood for it.

I watch shows i really liked right away though

I listen to the OP and ED. I also watch with no expectations and attempt to keep a clear mind regardless of how bad I might think the show is at that moment.

I was going to reply to this topic with "None", but then your message reminded me I apparently do have one ritual for starting a new series:

I always watch the OP and ED at least once (and if either changes, I'll watch the new one(s) at least once).

Damn, I didn't know we were such a rare breed. Only on very rare occasions where I just can't stand them (Golden Time first OP is a good example) do I skip them. Otherwise, even if I don't like them at first, they become something regular and pleasant that grows on you as the show progresses. Later, maybe a year or two, rewatching OP's and ED's becomes a real nostalgia trip :3

Anyway, I'm very picky with starting new shows, and usually I have to be fully awake and comfortable, with no perturbing elements what so ever, so that I can get as unaffected and immersive a first watch of a show as possible and so give it a properly fair chance.

I also write down my first impressions in a word document where I store all of that stuff, so that I can revisit it once I've watched more and see how my opinion changed.

The best of shows I don't watch alone, I have to be with a friend or sibling. If I watch a show before my Sister does, she doesn't watch it.

On the other end, we don't watch the opening to the last episode of an anime, and if they remove the opening that's good form. That opening is a time waster, the last episode is the final debut, SO KID UP THE PRODUCTION VALUES AND GO OUT WITH A BANG.

That said, watching the opening to an anime is always important first going in, but did you notice? Many anime have lately been placing openings at the end, as to properly introduce you to the series and BAMN! OPENING RIGHT DURING THE ENDING GET PUMPED FOR NEXT WEEK EPISODE 2!

I do that. Never thought it was weird.

I can hate an OP/ED for the first 10 episodes, then gradually start to love it. Recent example: Index's 1st ED.

I love it, most OPs get me pumped and excited. Or mellow and in the mood for a dark one.

Like, I can't imagine starting a OP or FT episode without watching the opening.

Plus if you are doing back to back, it breaks it up some.

I watch the OP for every episode. I don't want to deal with skipping through the video. Rarely watch the ED unless I really love it, or I know there's gonna be some little "bonus material" after the ED.

As for first episodes... I always watch the OP/ED, of course. Like someone else mentioned, I also like listening intently to the voices to see if I can identify a seiyuu. I also make a mental note of character archetypes and troupes that I expect to see throughout the series. It's fun to speculate, even with so little data.

I usually always have a beer ready to go before I start watching anime at night. Also have the kyusu or gaiwan ready to go for some sencha, oolong, or pu'erh tea. That's about it except after the first episode of a show I usually have the "I know that voice moment" and if I can't remember who it is I'll look it up. Mhm that's all I need, my beer and tea. Yeah tea is good.

My avatar is cute also.

I think I have that rare condition where I have to watch the whole series before I can judge it.

I watch the first two episodes, if it doesn't interest me after that, I quit watching it
