You know, some people say sacrificing yourself is an expression of true love. What do you think? How do you feel about sacrificing things? Would you sacrifice something for something else of equal or greater value?

Well, do you mean killing 1 person to save 2 or more? Hmm, I guess it would depend on the situation? Would all 3 people die? If yes, I would probably sacrifice 1 person, I suppose, if there is no other way.

Do we actually have those sorts of situations in real life though? I hope not.

Inspired topic, sir! This has me leaning more in the direction of "It is easy to die for someone, but to live for that person, that is another matter entirely".

BUT

If someone hadn't jumped off a bridge wearing twice their body weight in lumber and bedsheets, airports would still be empty fields.

It depends. Sacrifice, especially self-sacrifice, can be deemed as selfish and/or "over-rated," since they can and often do hurt other people.

"You worked at that dangerous, but well-paying job to buy your family nice things? Well, now you're on your deathbed before you even received your first paycheck. Your wife, children, friends, and various other loved ones will be made to spend the rest of their lives mourning your loss. Congrats."

"You sacrificed your career and the life of a politician to save a dying boy for the sake of your humanity? Well, the boy you saved happens to be a psychopath and mass murderer." <----- Obvious Monster reference.

I don't feel like making more examples. I'm feeling decidedly lazy.

Yes I would/do make sacrifices; however, I try to be careful, due to my previously-mentioned opinion of sacrifice.

I'm not too sure. It's different thinking it than to actually do it. I mean for me.

Every now and then I sacrifice a goat to summon the dark lord Satan.

But yeah, if the pros of sacrificing outweigh the pros of not sacrificing then it's a no-brainer, really.

idk if it's an expression of "true love"; more like, it's the right thing to do -- sacrificing yourself for the good of others.

but humans are selfish beings so few would put others above themselves

Logically, that's kind of a no-brainer, especially if you are sacrificing for something of greater value. Just depends on what one considers "valuable", I suppose.

You can make a sacrifice for yourself, or a sacrifice for others. The difference is intention. A sacrifice for others is rarely done in ill-will. It may not always turn out the way it was supposed to, but the good intention was there. Sacrifices for yourself have a greater likelihood of being done in selfishness with no regard for the people around you. These are done by people who are mostly looking to benefit themselves.

I don't really have an absolute stance on sacrifices. All I know is that in life, they are inevitable. You're always going to have to give something up. Whether a sacrifice is worth it or not is completely up to the individual.

Depends on what you're sacrificing and what you might get for it..
It normally only happens if the contributor gets benefit(s) in the end.

I guess sacrificing yourself for someone else could be an expression for true love; you know, in dire situations.

I would sacrifice only for my very close friends (like 2) that I've known since childhood and my family. Anything else, nope; even if it's a girlfriend or any other friends.

No better example of sacrifice. I tear up every time I see Arlington. It's an honor to work there.
