Seriously, I do not know as to why I hate Funimation. I have a deep hatred for them that for every time I see that logo of theirs before their trailers or clips, I grit my teeth and furrow my brow. I get so angry at them that I feel like I need to break something.
Recently, I had just checked out some clips for the English Dub for Attack on Titan and it began when I saw the logo. Also, the voices were pretty meh. Levi was too deep and gruff, Hanji was too high-pitched, Eren just didn't have the confidence and determination in his voice, Armin sounds too deep, Jean was seriously miscast, etc. They also mispronounced Mikasa's name wrong. Seriously, how does this happen? Their whole company is about dubbing anime and they continually mispronounce both names and certain terms. Do they not watch the original Japanese version and listen to it thoroughly and do research?
For example, for Steins;Gate they could have just pronounced Kurisu's name as "Kris" since that would be the correct form of the English version of her name? This is why Okabe would continue to refer to her a Kristina. Not only that, but in the original Japanese version, they actually call her Kris. For example, Mayuri refers to her as "Kris-Chan".
You see, in Dragon Ball, they continue to refer to the character known as Bluma as "Bulma", even though her name in Japanese is spelled as Buruma which would be pronounced in English as Bluma. It's the same situation of how Japanese pronounce Rule as Ruru. They pronounce the letter L with a R sound.

Well, you've only given one reason why you hate them so far - their dub work - which is not too convincing to me to begin with since people always hate on dubs anyway... And it was only one dub, at that... Not sure how to respond...

I don't see why that's a reason to hate Funimation. Its not like they force you to watch the dub. Or perhaps you're upset that they somehow "corrupt" the original, though I don't see how that's possible since the "original" is still there for access...

Side note about the name thing - I get it, but I really don't care. As someone who has a fairly odd name that is only pronounced properly roughly 30% of the time, I guess it just doesn't bother me. This will sound like heresy to sub purists - but as long as they consistently get it "wrong" I really don't care. And half of the time they don't even get it wrong, but just stress a different sylable. And when they DO stress the right syllable, they say a vowel wrong . And if not that, then i'm sure someone would find some other arcane quip with their pronunciation. To this very day I still don't understand why people complain about the dub's pronunciation of Nagisa and Konata... but those aren't even Funimation and i'm just rambling now lol

I just don't like their streaming. I've had nothing but problems during my two week trial. Random never ending buffering which resorts in either a refresh or dragging the slider back, diminishing quality, etc. etc.. I honestly can't see myself getting a subscription w/ them once my trial ends. That service is sort of poor. What I will commend them for is their customer service. Whenever I reported problems, they were pretty nice and quick about it. Other than that, yeah. Crunchyroll all day err day

You should only ever use their service if you have a Roku.

I love Funimation, they don't charge an arm two legs and a kidney for their releases.

Dubs, being optional, don't offend me either.

I do strongly dislike their website, but it doesn't like me either.

Hell, they even have a bunch of their stuff on Youtube.

I can see what you're saying about attack on titan and the voices not fitting but it's because I'm too used to the japanese voices right now, but they actually do pronounce Mikasa's name right. It's suppose to be Mi-kuh-suh not Mi-kah-sah. I thought they pronounced it wrong at first too but I went back to the japanese ver. and watched a clip of when they say Mikasa's name and they say it like how funimation says it. Don't believe me? Here's a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1jDgwysPcA

But with all that being said, I love Funimation. When I first started watching anime on TV it was all Funimation dubs. It brings back lots of memories. The newer shows they are dubbing though I haven't been watching because I already watched those shows and I'm used to the japanese voices though some of Funimation dubs are better than the original japanese. For instance, Yu Yu Hakusho is way better in english than the japanese.

You shouldn't judge them based on one show. You should give them a chance. I agree that nowadays they do use a lot of the same voice actor on lots of shows but I also think they are limited on voice actors. You should watch the shows they did back in the day those were the best!

As far as name pronunciation goes, I also find that sort of thing annoying. Trying to sound "technically correct" sometimes just comes off as sort of a smarmy thing to me. Kind of like in the Gurren Lagann dub where they insist on calling Simon Simone- a woman's name. Just call him ****ing Simon! Who cares if the Japanese version is different- it's likely due to engrish after all. Of course that isn't a Funi dub though, but it's sort of a trend I see in all dubs

It's actually supposed to be pronounced "Shimon" not "See-MON". Referring to him as "SIgh-mun" is incorrect however and it is what non-fans usually do unless told otherwise.

I did not judge them on just one show. It is just that they give off bad vibes to me. I don't trust them.

I do have a Roku and I actually had the service. It would constantly lag. I had it for a while until I cancelled it. Not only that, but I accidentally broke the Roku remote so I am unable to use the Roku. Oh well, the Roku was going to become a brick anyway after the two-year limit had passed which is going to be in a couple of months.

Well, it is true that for every dollar you give them they take a little piece of your soul.

But it's only a little piece. Hardly worth worrying over.

without funimation's help the anime industry outside of japan would be severely crippled plus out of all the anime distributors their releases are easiest on the wallet (in my opinion)
so like it or not funi is here to stay
