So I work at a Gamestop, I was talking to one of my co-workers the other day. Specifically about the Final Fantasy X and X-2, HD edition. Then he commented that Square Enix could have used the money that they used to make Final fantasy XIII Lighting Returns to remaster Final Fantasy VII. What do you guys think? Do you think they would have done that instead? Do you think that it would be a good idea to make an HD edition for Final Fantasy VII?

No.
same reason i actually avoid 99% of so called 'hd-remakes/remasters'.
If a Game was awesome the time you played it first, a replay could always destroy those memories, or show flaws you didn't notice at first.

Not at all. An "HD edition" is simply an upscale in resolution. It wouldn't necessarily look all that much better. I would rather have a remake instead of an HD remaster

it would be a good idea to REMAKE ff7.

cuz I tried to play the PS1 version, but I quit halfway, can't stand the sh*tty graphics. (it was good for its time, but I can't go back to playing that sort of graphics).

Better off just making a full remake of it. Been a long time since PSX days. A full on overhaul would be great. Then JP will get Ruby & Emerald weapon in this version

I see this getting talked about like a lot. I think its gonna be a huge investment that I think Square Enix doesn't have the time, or the money right now. Personally I don't really care but I know a lot of people do. Plus they are gonna have to change a lot of things in the game to meet current-gen standards. Add voice acting which should be easy cause of Advent Children, redo cutscenes, recreate areas to make look like the XIII trilogy, etc. They could use Advent Children and go from there. I don't know I'm just rambling now...

EDIT - also forgot to add that most people from squaresoft back in the day aren't around anymore. That's probably another reason why the won't remake it or its taking a while

the thing that annoys me is that I consider 10 and 10-2 to be two of the worst final fantasies ever, why did they get a hd remake before 6, 7 or 9.

Honestly though, I wouldn't be surprised if square has a 7 remake already done, just in case the are ever in serious financial straits they can release it for massive payday

I'm going to be blunt: FFVII's appeal is 110% nostalgia driven. Everything about the game from the graphics to the story was amazing back then, but do not hold up in the slightest today. I respect FFVII for popularizing JRPGs the world over, but it's not a game that should be put up on a pedestal. There are too many RPGs that deserve (well made) remakes more than FFVII...VI comes to mind.

Probably because X is incredibly popular? VI has already had numerous ports, and VII/IX wouldn't really benefit from an HD remaster to begin with.

10 is one of the worst Final Fantasy games? No other Final Fantasy hit me in the feels as much as 10. I would agree with you if you just said 10-2 but 10 is one of the best if not the best Final Fantasy imo.

Also the reason it's hard for them to remake 6, 7, 9 / all the other ones before 10 is because it is a lot harder to make an HD game from the PS1 era, something to do with coding. They would have to completely remake the game. I'd be happy if they would just re release the same game like they did already and add Trophy Support / maybe a few other things but keep the same game

Why waste Square's resources on making a remake when they can easily port the original via online download for Steam, or PSN.

I am honestly not sure whether Square Enix should remake FFVII or not. Im convinced that Once the remake is announced (assuming it does get announced) it will be the game that will either make or break Square Enix.

Let's get the worst case scenario out of the way first. Given Square Enix's track record lately there is reason to believe that they will either half a** the remake or do something that will anger the fan base kind of like how people got angry at mass effect 3's ending. (It's reasonable to assume if they remake it from the ground up that the story is somewhat going to change) If this happens then Square Enix's flagship franchise will probably be damaged beyond repair. And in this case the franchise that saved square back in the 80's will be the same franchise that will do them in.

On the other hand if Square does a great job of Remaking FFVII and is almost universally acclaimed. It will bring people who lost interest the final fantasy franchise back, bring in new fans, and might make Square Enix the JRPG Powerhouse that they where in the 90's/early 2000's.

I think the reason why they haven't announced the remake of Final Fantasy VII is because i think they know that remaking the game is a double edge sword and they don't seem to be willing to take the risk at this time. Recently Square has said with the sales of Bravely Default that they want to stop going after western appeal (trying to perform call of duty sale numbers) and go back to there roots. I personally want to see them make good on there word before remaking Final Fantasy VII

I'd venture to say they're afraid of messing it up, and they probably may get around to it eventually, but not on current gen platforms. Maybe PS4 and/or Xbox One. They probably don't have enough money or a worthy development team set up for a project like that yet, either. But it would be quite a billion-dollar sellout regardless of quality, so never say never..
