3. Moderators aren't scared... And what I mean by that is that they bann people if they're not not following forum rules and not being civilized.

What? Please. I'm not polite to you. I'm merely tolerating your existence.

so I've been noticing that people are more polite on crunchyroll than other web sites I use. youtube is about the worst I have seen, with fights breaking out, swearing, calling others names, and even bring up the said persons mother. another website I use quite frequently is the Escapist. this ones not as bad because usually it's not childish name calling (I guess because it can be posted to facebook) but a lot of arguments still break out, some being as long as 10 paragraphs (after 3 I stop reading). but here on crunchyroll I don't see that, I guess I haven't really looked deeper into the form posts.

So what are your thoughts?

I don't think how often arguments happen is really anything to do with politeness, unless like in youtube and such there's name-calling, ad hominems, and general terrible-person debate tactics. Personally, I think if there are fewer arguments in CR (which corresponds to my experience as well) it just means people aren't reading each other's posts as much. So, like, some people just see a thread topic in the forum links in the sidebar and give their response to the question in the title without even reading the OP, and so the number of posts that are actually responding to someone else's post is lower.

Also, how polite CR's forums seem really varies depending on which sites you use. I don't really know about "politeness", but as far as correlates of that like "apparent intelligence of the posters" and "quality of discussion"... well, the other sites I frequent most for discussion (I use an adblock script that makes Youtube comments invisible) are Reddit, which has a karma system that lets people upvote posts they think are good quality (which sometimes just means "made me lol") and downvote others, so rudeness that doesn't at least manage to be funny or clever sinks and disappears... and a site who as well as using a Reddit-based script and karma system also has users whose average IQ is confirmed to be impossibly high http://lesswrong.com/lw/jj0/2013_survey_results/.

Well, it is indeed less likely to happen than on sites like Youtube, but it still happens quite a lot.
Like you say, flame wars start with people who are loyal to different products, so obviously it is highly possible for people who like different types of Anime to flame each other. Anime isn't just one thing after all.

I never said anything about a flamewar not being possible to break out on CR, but what I was saying was that it's less likely to happen since everyone on this site pays for the exact same service (if you don't count region restrictions).

Also, sites like YouTube don't have any types of moderators as CR does!

The "everyone has the same tastes" reason sounded better to me, not sure if paying for the same service accounts to much.
But yeah, if that's what you meant then agreed.

Yeah. Someone should definitely hire some mods for youtube as well, the flamewars in it are beyond terrible.

Youtube itself turned terrible when Google bought it. They change their damn UI twice a month. They impose their horrible gimmicks on you without you having a say in it (*cough* Google+ *cough* feather beta *cough*). And their comment system is ruined beyond recognition. The "top comments" as it were are just spammers that can reply to themselves a hundred times. Yea...great idea youtube...

Youtube has forums? Or is everyone just talking about the comments section under every video? Sorry if that's a stupid question, but I just never read those unless I'm looking for info on what I just watched and the description is lacking. Youtube comments don't really count as a forum imo. In other words there's no real community. It's just a lot of random passersby, many of whom are simply looking for a fight from the jump. I mean why would you deliberately click on a video that you know you won't like just to leave inflammatory comments for the fans to get riled over? And why as a fan would you get into a 16 post flame war with someone who's obviously a hater instead of just ignoring them and proceeding to gush about the thing that you just watched and love so much? Answer: You're looking for a fight.

I've noticed CrunchyRoll users to be pretty friendly and welcoming as a whole, too.

There aren't as many fights as you would think. The things I deal with most are spambots and quote pyramids. Although nobody ever reports quote pyramids, I just do it for fun.

YouTube is a vile place when it comes to comments. Majority of the people there are psychotic, immature, has anger problems, judgmental, and overall a trolling asshole.

I find Crunchyroll much BETTER than MyAnimeList when it comes to the forums. I had to leave MAL twice because the people there are terrible.

Well, I guess they just work on the most popular videos only. Don't see them anywhere in the videos I watch. Kinda understandable, but considering how rich Google should be, it wouldn't hurt them to add more mods, would it?

Ugh! I don't mind the UI thing and such, but the comment system must be a cruel prank, gets on my nerves so many times. That's another thing they HAVE to fix ASAP.
