so the title explains it

i'm not far from my annual trip to visit my relatives in Canada and i'd love the ability to download episodes of anime from Crunchyroll to view while offline

moved to Suggestions/Feedback.

Unfortunately, an offline solution is not in the cards, just like Hulu or Netflix.

From a purely technical and use-case point of view, this functionality is a no-brainer.

Sadly, as far as I can tell, the ability to store content offline changes it in a legal/contractual from a "stream" into a "download". Which tends to have a different set of rights. Not just "extra rights" but "rights that may have been granted to another company already".

As far as I can guess, this would require not just the technical work to recode the mobile apps to handle offline data but it would also require rights negotiations. Either directly acquiring them from the Japanese licensor, against companies who are probably trying to get the home+download rights as well. Or by negotiating a sublicensing deal with whichever home distributor has the download rights, to be allowed to do it this way.

Add to this the likelihood of needing to DRM-protect the local cached copy and you get in an extra layer of problems, especially for iOS devices where I suspect that they would need to use FairPlay DRM. But that would also require negotiating with Apple, too.
