The Anime That Turned You Into An Otaku
Posted 4/16/14
What is the anime that turned you from a casual watcher of anime to a full-blown otaku, constantly watching anime and following the industry?

The show for me that gave me my "Holy shit..." moment when I realized anime was an amazing form was Madoka Magica. Since then I have been hooked.

Some random perverted show I saw that made me to look for more, and then I got used to it.

I already read manga with One Piece but I rarely saw Anime that much, maybe Bleach and Fairy Tail time to time when I remembered.

I am really greatful to perverted series otherwise I wouldn't be a fan as of today.

Honestly, I made the decision to become an otaku before I even watched any anime. I'd heard a lot about anime before then and I was like "Whatever I'll start with Naruto, that's popular." I got about 100 episodes in, skipped the filler to get to Shippuden, then watched like two episodes of Shippuden before realizing that Hinata wasn't going to play a major role and thus I didn't care, so I dropped it.

The anime that I was first really a fan of was after that when I watched Azumanga Daioh.

Well... Influential shows were Sailor Moon/Gundam Wing/Tenchi and FMA/FLCL/Paranoia Agent stages of my life. Even that Naruto phase... The real things that got me insanely interested in the stuff was Elfen Lied, Mai-HiME and Kanon (2006). It all started there when I discarded my little video game hobby for anime and joy.

Shakugan no Shana, Fairy Tail, and Haruhi Suzumiya 'course I'd rather be seen as anime fan rather than otaku. You use that word yet you know not it's meaning.

Code Geass. Yeah.... That is the anime that made me go from casual watcher, to much more invested in the industry. Almost all of the anime I have seen has been post 2008. XD

Don't consider myself an Otaku despite the amount of Anime I watch and follow. Baka and Test was the first one I watched though when I seriously got into Anime a year and a half ago.

It really wasn't an anime as much as it was entertainment mediums that made me a rabid viewer. Each time a new medium came to me, it just enhanced my obsession to the point it is today.

I guess what kicked it off was The Cartoon Network's Toonami and Adult Swim. That made me a huge anime fan when I was younger. I had watched anime since I was a toddler, but that made me aware that it wasn't cartoons, and that I liked them far more than cartoons. If there was any specific anime of that time I would highlight, I would say Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Outlaw Star were the premier standouts.

After that, I moved around the corner from an anime store, that had boatloads of cheap rentals. That opened up my exposure even more and made me a bigger fan. The best one of that period was hands down Rurouni Kenshin.

And then along came Netflix, which made it more accessible and at a lower cost. And the highlight of that period was Read or Die the TV.

And lastly, where I became totally hopeless, was with the rise of free streaming videos and the anime that came with it. That started back in 2006. And in the last eight years, I've watched more anime than the entire 24 years that preceded it. Crunchyroll was the main culprit, along with spots like Veoh and Naruto Wire. And there are just far too many animes to count that made me the nutjob over anime I am today. Code Geass, TTGL, Lovely Complex, Death Note, on and on...

I'm not sure.
Can't remember when was the turning point between liking japanese animation and otaku.

Maybe was Saint Seiya, or Macross, or even Sailor Moon.

But, I always liked japanese animation. Since Mazinger Z, Kimba and Astroboy.
