I understand they're goofy shows usually and dont make much sense sometimes but people literally loathe them. Their usual argument is that there is no plot but why would you expect some deep layered plot about a show that has girls with huge boobs in little outfits. my only issue with harems is the dumb unrealistic main characters. what man no matter what age or how shy would be able to have three girls mushing their boobs in his face and saying "no no stop " before running away .

Because it's kind of been overdone over the years.

If it was just goofy that would be one thing. However, most harem series are completely infested with overly bland characters, plots that go absolutely no where, barely EVER any resolution for the romantic part of the series, and an over abundance of fan-service that serves absolutely no purpose. It can grate on people a whole lot. Sure does on me.

However, there are some decent to good harem anime. The World God Only Knows is pretty good, then you have Fruits Basket and Ouran, which are pretty good reverse harems. However, these seem to be the exception rather than the rule, and the latter two is more Rom-Com than Harem, so things actually tend to progress. :/

Because it's an easily cliched genre, and they might not want what it has to give in the first place.

There could be an exception slipping my mind, but I don't think I've ever liked a harem because it was a harem, only because the harem element helped the story in general to be something I liked.

Yeah exactly, this sort of thing. Mecha is in a similar category for me as well, I won't like a show just because it's got giant robots. It has to do something with those giant robots that I find interesting enough to watch in the first place.

I don't loathe harem animes. I just take them for what they are, dumb comedy. Not every anime is going to be a Satoshi Kon masterpiece, you just gotta enjoy them for what they are. Goofy, laughable shows.

I think it depends on if the show has anything else going for it.

Ultimately I don't think Harem genre can stand on it's own and that is what generates a lot of animosity when they try and do that.

Oh yes. I hate them.
In fact, I learned to dislike them since Love Hina.

First, I'm not fond of male protagonists. And harem protagonists usually are the worst of the worst.
Second, I kinda dislike the idea of having a lot of female liking one guy because... because the writer says so.
Third, I surely have another reason, but I can't figure it right now.

The only harem that I liked was Steel Angel Kurumi 2. And was a yuri harem.
Guess that my love for yuri is greater than my hate for harems.

They are not meant to be taken seriously, its just harmless escapism. I quite like harem anime, as I like to be able to switch my brain off and just unwind sometimes.

Too many characters. If I wanted to see so many people (albeit anime characters) I'd have a life.

This.

What gets me the most is the bland characters and plots.

I mean, if you wanna have a fanservice and/or harem show, go right on ahead. But at least be creative with it. I really don't fancy watching the same five girls swooning over the same guy in the same high school over and over into infinity.

Harems also lack any meaningful development, which is the whole reason I watch a story in the first place. If I go through 12 whole episodes just to go from point A to... well, still on point A, then I don't see the point.

One problem I have always had with harems is that the male protagonists are usually terrible. You have to believe that not only are there around 5 girls who have fallen in love with the same guy, but that this guy has NO IDEA these girls love him... all while they actively pursue him (in most cases).

It's like the writers have no faith in their own abilities, so they just made the main character super dense as to stop the show from turning into a hentai, instead of trying to come up with a better reason.

Then again, that just ends in School Days...

Pretty much this.

When they aren't funny or have irritating characters is when i get frustrated.

Because it's sleazy, cliche and trashy.
