i actually don't know anyone who hates harems. i got to admit i don't like harems that much but that may be because i'm a girl. i know that my friend likes harems. she actually watches most popular harems and she shows me all the harems that i have watched.

I haven't seen much harem myself, but most of the girls in a harem are really annoying. It's also funny seeing the person in the middle of the harem not even recognizing that a ton of people love him/her but just recognizes one girl. How ignorant can you be?

I don't hate harems, but I don't like them either. In other words, I just don't care too much about that same old 1 guy, ~20 girls living under the roof thing. What I don't like about harems is that the main male characters are usually silly, like others mentioned, and have gotten overrated the past decade.

Why are harems so popular in Japan, seriously?

I love Harems though. Haven't found many I disliked, none I can remember off the top of my head at least.

What bothers me personally is that the protagonists in said harems are, invariably, either generic guys with no defining characteristics except being "nice," or (more rarely) boring jerks who are abusive towards the women in their harem. The female characters are usually "types" (tsundere, yandere, alien or other supernatural thing, loli, catgirl or other animal-girl, childhood friend, etc.) with almost no thought put into their characterization besides that.

Worst of all, there's either no resolution, or it's completely obvious what the resolution will be.

I don't hate harems, but they're painfully generic. Then again, I'm not exactly their target audience, but I don't like most reverse-harems either (Ouran not withstanding) so it may not be just me.

My thoughts exactly.

Seems like the only thing selling in Japan is boobs and butts. (with of course a few exceptions)

The World God Only Knows and Nisekoi are the harems I've been watching/reading. (TWGOK is kinda a harem...?) No story progression and rehashed plots are what get on my nerves. If it passes those requirements, I'm all for it.

As a person who doesn't like them, all I can really say is that the general idea of multiple people swooning over the same person doesn't do anything for me. I know there are a lot of really good shows based around a harem premise, and I've seen some of them, but the basic concept tends to put me off. I wish I liked them though, it would make it that much easier to find a good show to watch. Such is life..

The concept of girls falling in love with the same guy is usually bad characterization. Generally there is no reason for this other then the fact that he is the main character. I have found that there is no resolution usually, the guy never displays any interest in any one girl in particular nor do any of the girls decide to just pursue someone else.

As far as I can tell the way Harem show's keep things interesting is for the main character to accumulate more and more girls and to use blatant fanservice.

If I am enjoying the main plot, I can overlook a harem's existence. However it would be best if they did not exist. No one in a harem acts in a realistic manner, which increases the odds that they will all be hollow cliches.

I think its fine to enjoy them for entertainment. I have some bad tastes myself. But they are certainly not the best that anime has to offer.

Whether the main character is male or female, it's all the exact same regardless. I guess its meant to have the viewer place himself or herself in a situation like that without doing really anything. In reality you are not that lucky but in fiction you are.

Just how I see it.

Mainly the weak MC galore....but meh dnt hate it, I watch them for the fan service if some of the girls are to my liking, OR if there is a reasonable stance that the Mc is deserving of the love, i.e truly Suave and a Vag Slayer, example Princess lover, though that later became Hentai, something went wrong there LOL.

LOL but honestly the thread is making me laugh a bit, most in the West hates it, as seen by our fellow CR's xD, but japan loves it due to being such a shame culture anything with T&A sells like hotcakes to get out most of those frustrations and live the wild "fantasies" of being joe regular as fuck blow yet gets every beautiful girl ever. So meh I cant hate it, it comes from the same culture which has given me my most enjoyed media, Anime, so w/e they tack on with their great works is fine with me, even if the genre is as crude as it gets making you question the fanbase. While those here can cry and moan about it but it will never reach the creators as they could careless what we like here.

Honestly they could ask the same thing as, why the fuck are there so many sitcoms with freaking 8 seasons of NOTHING yet we still like them and create more. Looking at you Big Bang and HIMYM.

I've seen many harems but The World God Only Knows easily takes the crown for best harem. I have Watched/Read TWGOK and Keima is simply an outstanding MC he is AWARE of his situation, he knows what he wants and how to get it. Other harems can't really hold a candle since the MC's are clueless/oblivious and these type of MC's tend to drive the viewer insane.

One popular harem right now is Nisekoi and oh my goodness the MC literally does 1 kind deed and girls fall for him like nothing. (I'm really curious how this series will end (who am I kidding ---Harem Ending Incoming----)

Another reason to hate harems is because of the typical harem ending, you have all these girls fall for one guy but when it comes for the conclusion of said "story" the MC has the nerve to not pick one single girl. As viewer you pick a girl to ship with the MC only to be let down by the typical harem ending where no one gets picked.

Simply if you're looking for "plot" don't bother with harems. But if you're looking to kill time and need some laughs/ dumb scenarios/ typical walk-in shower scene/ accidental groping/fanservice then harems fit the description.
