Because god forbid anyone ever has more than one person who likes them (despite the fact I'm guessing MOST people at some point in their lives have had a point where at least two people liked them), doubly so if male. Seems to awaken some primal fury in people, jealousy or something maybe.

Also they usually contain the most evil of evils, fan service. It's no surprise how much people dislike it. In fact out of any single element of anything it's probably the most hated overall. Bad nonsensical plot? Forgivable. Poor animation? Forgivable. Excessive cussing/blood and gore for the sake of being edgy? Forgivable. But a bit of jiggling boob or butt, or well toned pecks? Worse thing ever, 0/10, cliche trash, worthless 14 year old *** material, etc.

So yeah that's the main reason why but also to be fair a lot of them are actually a bit over predictable or lack any substance or plot. They tend to be hit and miss with me, but I won't automatically assume something is bad because of it either like most people seem to. The best way to view it imo is like a dumb hollywood Action/comedy film. Yeah most don't hold up well under scrutiny but they're fun to turn your brain off and have something nice to look at, and there is the occasional gem

I like harem animes, but I kind of hate the people who are sort of the reason that harem animes continue to be made. They are the same type of people that fly into a murderous rage just because they've heard that their favorite voice-actress/idol has a boyfriend.

Personally don't like harem anime because they're not done well.

Most of the times, there's never any real reason why 4 or 5 characters like the main character... The main character that is supposedly liked by a lot of characters is usually not that interesting and is dull as a chalk, they just like the main character simply because the writer told them to, so as an audience, I feel unsatisfied.

Excessive use of overused sex jokes; wind blowing up skirt, shirt ripped by itself out of nowhere, character falling over another character into a sex position (Watch Strike The Blood; this anime is the most guilty of all of these things).

Because terrible harems like Nisekoi, To-Love-Ru and Shuffle exist but not all harems are horrible but a bad harem will make your brain shrivel down and die

The main character is bland and usually forgettable.

The girls are walking tropes. They never change past whatever they are presented as (tsundere, loli, childhood friend, tomboy, etc).

It's because people like to take every anime serious. There are certain anime that you can sit back an relax ( harems ) and the others which you can focus on the story and characters. I personally like harems, the only bad harem I 've watched was infinite stratos, but after that there are some good ones like haganai, hsdxd, twgok.

The inherent cruelty to the girls premised in the genre. TWGOK is an exception because it tackles the cruelty head on. The protagonist knows he is toying with the emotions of the girls in the harem and it hurts him in the end. Granted he is building his harem to save the world but there is an emotional price to stringing so many girls along. Haganai tackled this topic head on too. The lead male knew it was cruel to not pick one of the girls and just tried to ignore the problems(spoiler: it didn't work). Most other harem animes are cliche and trite and mediocre. I think Mahormatic (sp?) just magically cloned the lead at the end so each girls got her man. That was a novel if cheap solution.

I have to agree with many in saying that it is somewhat overdone. Also, all to often, there is no resolution.

Everyone is giving TWGOK as a good harem example. The problem is, it is not really a harem until the end. It's more of Keima seducing various girls who will then forget him. It isn't until the end that some of them remember him.

Some examples of harem genre done well are:

Shuffle - In that series the guy actually picks someone.

Campione - In it, he does not pick anyone, but it is understood that all of the girls agree to be with him concurrently and understand that it will be a permanent harem.

Nakiamo, My Sister is Among Them - MC knows the girls are falling for him and knows he has to make a choice. If you see the 13th episode, he does make a choice

^^This

Its the same with comedies, slice of life, and moe anime; their not meant to be taken seriously.
People just can't get over the fact that an anime has no plot.
Its like American action movies, nobody watches Rambo for the story, its all about the fighting and shooting.

The Ambition of Oda Nobuna is a great harem that focuses more on the story, with a strong MC, the MC actually chooses the main female character, and there isn't any fighting over the MC between the girls.
Besides the small amount of fan service, this anime does away with a lot of the usual harem tropes.

Although there are also pseudo harems, where either none or only one or two of the girls like the MC; the MC just happens to be around a lot of girls.

Also, as for fan service some people forget that some harems also fall under the ecchi genre.

Add Sekirei to the list, Minato wants to live happily with all of them and acknowledges that they consider them his wives.

I don't like that "90something% of it is crap" cause that applies to everything, no genre is particularly better in that regards. Harem is typically more prone to being boring and cliche but they're always the standouts stuff like the Monogatari series, Ouren High, TWGOK, Haganai, DxD(incredibly silly and shameless).

So yeah, don't hate it don't love it. It's just a genre like any other.
