Wouldn't a better definition of GAR be:

A Manly Man:

"A Man who's more Man than any man has a right to be."

Fate/Zero or the FSN VN, the source material for the upcoming reboot (don't let Shiro Emiya's whimpy apperance fool you, not to mention he ain't Superman or Doomsday but at least he knows what his real weaknesses are, which then turns them into true inner strength unmatched by anyone in the Fate series) is manliness at its finest.

I also think Ghost in the Shell, Space Captain Harlock and Black Jack have some great deal of stuff we consider gar. Claire from Claymore may be a half-demon chick, but at least she shows the value of the underdog's spirit and is in fact the one true, supreme claymore (and can also make a dumb musclehead with ripped abs look like a big crybaby).

I agree with the one who mentioned Gurren Lagann, with the 2 real anime men, Kamina & Simon showing how brotherly love equates to manliness or true, personal strength. Also, don't underestimate FMA's Edward, 'cause Edward has the maturity, wisdom and better type of growth than some guys, not to mention that age is nothing, in terms of masculinity and possessing the inner manpower, when it comes to this awesome character.

It's easy go have a bitter sweet ending. The one where the girl dies and the villian is defeated and the Hero moves on....but no. That was Season 2. The end season? Nope. Its all perfection.

Fist of the North Star ends with the most GAR of villians, the self proclaimed "Fist King or Ken-oh" Roah, taking on Kenshiro in the ultimate battle between the Savior of the Worlds end, and the Ruler of the Worlds end.

And nobody regrets the outcome, not even Roah.
