Has no one mentioned Sengoku Basara? When recommending it to people I literally just describe it as "crazy manly swordfights" ...and sometimes horseback riding.

Did anyone mention Garo yet? I mean... it has "Gar" right in its name, at the beginning.

I have only ever seen the four Live Action series and their movies, they lack a small something that keeps them from getting to the GAR level, and it is the same thing that keeps Kamen Rider series form getting there.

Gar characters/anime are likeable, but extremely rare. I agree that grown women and under-aged boys can be manly in personality, too. Manliness or GAR, like beauty, is skin deep, rather than physical. Chiseled men aren't always qualified to be GAR. I agree from one of the other posters that Ghost in the Shell is like manly. It's all about the balls or ballsy personality that characters have.

Edward Elric should be in that picture with the boat working out. He may be short, but he does have balls. Vegeta should be there, too.

"Crazy manly swordfights" as you stated are not actually manly, but rather being cool or kicking ass. Sengoku Basara is just as badass, if not more than either Yu Yu Hakusho or Helling, but none of those anime are really manly (which is about having strong inward character, perceptions or feelings and may relate to fighting until the very end for those one felt it was his or her duty to protect).

Manliness may also represent loyalty and honor if a character is willing to relinquish, yield or compromise life or a limb for the ones a man, woman or child care about. A similar example would be seen in the later episodes of either Fullmetal Alchemist TV series.
