I don't think I can really comment. I only have up to Volume 17 of FT in the Manga. From what I heard everything goes downhill or something around the 30's.

Really? I'm enjoying even the latest chapters.

Seems the general consensus I have seen on FT not just on CR but also on other parts of the dark world of the web, is FT just turns into ecchi - fanservice - dribble that isn't worth the time or money.

I of course have differing ideas of what is considered too ecchi and too much fanservice (just so we are aware, there is no such thing for me). I'm also pretty deluded into them as well I suppose since I have seen WAY ecchier and WAY more fanservice than what 17 volumes of FT and the 170 or whatever episodes gave me.

Hell one volume of another Manga I own beats FT's ecchi let alone fanservice.

BUT until I get up my FT collection I just have to roll with what others say about it.

well from my experience, all manga are usually alot darker than their anime counterpart.

from people who loves the manga, this may be a spit in the face. but its to attract a broader audience and usually they may stumble upon the manga and enjoy the more serious tone.

honestly i like the uplifting tone fairy tail has with the brightly colored animation and characters.

i don't mean to undermine you in anyway, but i think this is more of a conflict of visualation of a book vs the visual adaptation syndrome.
such as, after seeing a certain harry potter movie or a superhero movie. you hear people who branch from the book/comic version to complain non stop about it.

i mean, i am one myself when it comes with spiderman. i grew up before the amazing spiderman, so peter parker being playful in a jockish tone annoys me. the new movie last year i hated only because my favorite villain the lizard who had a pretruding head is round isntead. but honestly as a movie, it was pretty good for a hollywood production.

in short. any visual adaption of the book is an adaptation of the studio that has made it. if you can seperate the two media, it would make both easier to enjoy. but i understand how you can set up an expectation, and having it blown to smithereens.

anywho, im more likely to watch an anime before the manga, but because of time constrain i usually stick to anime. only series i have read before the anime was gintama. but thats not even close to what you are feeling.

I can tell you that fanservice does indeed go through the roof in the latest volumes of Fairy Tail. They're a lot of nude scenes (of course cleverly censored) Clearly everyone is trying to be like Gray. Nevertheless even with all the ecchiness I still find it to be a good read. Fairy Tail has a kid Friendly theme (Friendship is power) but the material is clearly Rated R.

As a fan of the series who is not yet caught up on the manga, I have absolutely no issue with this.

yup yup, fairy tail was the anime that got me into anime, but it was because of its awesome soundtrack that i randomly found, which ofc the manga doesn't have. The composer really does a great job.

as for ecchi of FT manga... well, Mashima would be a good hentai artist but overall his drawing is amazing. I read somewhere that he's one of the fastest mangakas in the industry. I watched a video of him drawing Natsu, it really was super quick.

Thankfully the new series has a more faithful adaption of the manga art style(bigger budgets) than the first one!

I watched the first anime adaptation and my only real problem was the character art and animation, the only real positive I could give it was it's OSTs. The artwork of the characters was no where as good as Hiro Mashima's. I heard about the new anime coming out having better artwork, but I didn't plan to watching it since I dropped the manga a whiiile ago because I just wasn't enjoying it (I still think Mashima has great artwork but I didn't really like the story). I checked out a few clips/pictures of the latest episode of the new anime and it seems the artwork was still not perfect.

I found a tumblr post where a user compared scenes of the new anime with scenes of the manga.

This is just one of the pictures there are more in the link^

As much as I like the anime, I prefer the manga, 'cause I'd prefer to get up to date on the new Tartarus Arc and do not want to miss it. Not to mention that Tartarus arc is awesome and will not go into more detail than that. As said above, the OSTs are nice.
