Sincere:
I thoroughly enjoyed the romance in SAO. It felt genuine and real. Asuna and Kirito would have never even talked to each other in real life, but in SAO things are different and it brought two unlikely people together and they ended up being perfect matches for each other. Not a only that, but I loved how the romance developed and that it went beyond the first kiss, unlike many shounens.

Insincere:
Hopefully one day they'll adapt SAO Progressive and we'll get the full details on the Aincrad arc and then we can really see Kirito and Asuna's relationship develop over a longer period of time.

And I HATE it when people hate on the romance. I don't think they realized that SAO's event was two years. Asuna and Kirito fell in love over the course of two years, to us roughly 11 episodes. It may have seemed rush but most romance anime actually have the leads fall in love over the course of one school year, or even a semester. Kazuto and Asuna had plenty of time to be in love with each other as we see them in Fairy Dance and now Phantom Bullet.

I totally agree. I liked how it actually shows them become a couple. And I think a lot of people would be very happy if they adapt SAO Progressive because that would doss a lot of people's complaints about the first half of the series (I think).

The problem with the romance in the first half is that Asuna was always just a little too much of a perfect dream date.

Also seriously guys, praise the show all you want as a fun exciting adventure, but SAO is no more 'about' something than Jurassic park is "about" genetic engineering.

Too much a dream date? Give me a damn break. They got along, what's so bad about that?

And you can harp on the show all you want but I'm going to give it praise because I thought it was great. Don't make it sound like your opinion somehow is right and that this show is in fact nothing special. Your opinion is just as valid as mine. That's great that you didn't like it, but I did like it, so stop making it sound we're wrong for saying that it's good.

Why are people getting a bee in their bonnet over SAO popularity?

Don't like it? Well don't watch it.

She's a textbook fantasy girl. She's hot, she's from a rich family, she's caring, she's a skilled homemaker, she's smart, she's a good fighter. Except in what you might call 'women's specialties' she's almost - but not quite - as good as Kirito is, as becomes the fantasy girlfriend.

About the other thing, that's just the way I write. I feel that I can argue pretty conclusively that SAO is not about VR tech, but rather that VR tech is just part of the setting (and similarly that it's not about MMO's, but MMO's are part of the setting).

More to the style, it's destructive to my own arguments to be constantly saying 'well, in my opinion...' Nobody really does that as a general rule, because you're shooting yourself in the foot. But let me say it; absolutely your opinion is as valid as mine. That doesn't mean I'm not gonna state mine, and state mine strongly, as the opinions are strongly held.

I'm generally willing (and able) to support those opinions too, but the discussion tends to spiral out endlessly then, and it's kind of a drag for everyone else :p

~~~
I'm not in general as down on the show as you might think, just a few things that bug me; The one that's actually come up is that the depiction of Asuna is legitimately problematic in some ways, and I think it's actually important to point that out on occasion.
Alternatively because we want more from anime than another Hero's Journey :p
(And again, its fun to have a debate about it. Much more interesting than 50 pages of agreement. Nobody has to take part)
The relationship between Akatsuki and Naotsugu in Log Horizon is better/more developed then Asuna and Kirito.
nothing, it sucks, the first 4 episodes are a trap, thats the best you will ever see from the series, it turns out as a useless harem, and the second season, OMG that was the shittiest arc in any anime, i dont know GGO, but the second season was shit, and the first was average
