I wouldn't say that otaku translates perfectly well to geek... Geek is far less offensive than otaku... Have you heard of the The Otaku Murder? I believe I read somewhere that people in Japan still think that otaku are like the otaku murder... Now in America geek doesn't have as bad of a reputation like that. I suppose the two terms have gotten less negative. However, I wouldn't identify myself as either of them.

Geek and nerd and the like are only less offensive nowadays.

Yes I heard about Tsutomu Miyazaki's murders, that was in the late 80's. There will always be people who will still use terms like otaku, or geek or nerd derogatorily, and they certainly still exist, but it doesn't mean the term is universally considered negative at the present time.

According to at least one recent (2013) study that surveyed 137,734 Japanese, when asked if they consider themselves "Otaku". 42.2% said yes, they consider themselves as otaku, with 57.8% saying they do not consider themselves otaku. When this is broken down into age ranges, 62% of those studied in the 10-19 year age range considered themselves otaku, and 55.6% in the 20-29 year old range consider themselves otaku. I would expect if the term was universally negative, the youngest groups most susceptible and exposed to peer pressure and bullying would be the least likely to openly consider themselves otaku. The lower percentages with age is also expected given they grew up in different generations, and have generally less time to focus on those hobbies.

I would be willing to bet these percentages would probably be quite comparable to people who consider themselves nerds or geeks in the U.S.

Hmm very interesting. It's a shame people cannot view japan's entertainment as positive. It generates a lot of income and is quite frankly enjoyable. Although, this survey certainly spreads more light into the matter. Thanks for sharing It probably would've taken me a while to find the information lol.

Nope. Otaku is a derogatory term. I find it funny how Americans think it means geek lol... It doesn't... I would call myself a fan of anime, manga, and games. Definitely not an otaku.

well, we've more or less hijacked the word in english to mean a geek that is specifically into japanese media. It's taken on a new meaning that is that somewhat removed from the original japanese meaning/connotation.
