It only particularly bothers me if it's especially heavy and/or hypocritical, though hypocrisy isn't all that bad when the character(s) are clearly meant to be like that. Bonus points if other characters call them out for it. It bugs me when it seems like the creator(s) of the show don't realize the BS. Of course, drawn-out preaching is annoying when it stalls the show.

I think it is a general consensus that an audience doesn't want to be told what to think bluntly. That doesn't always apply though. I guess there are many distinctions when it comes down to it.
On one hand, if the writer is constantly finding any excuse to push the same unrefined ideal to the audience, it is annoying and corrodes the story. On the other, the convictions of the characters in their monologues give them life and contribute to their characters, so long as the ideas driving them develop over time. This is really more of an issue of mutability (ability to mutate) in characters. If characters are preaching the same stuff over in over, the story degenerates with the lack of movement in the characters. If the preaching is evolving, the story evolves with it and keeps thing interesting.
Still, preaching in the form of yelling introduces more to the rhetorical table. There are innumerous situations and presentation methods that influence the intended and received perceptions to the speech. In rhetoric, the situations are complicated and involve so many things it hurts your brain if you think to hard about it. So long as the message reaches its target audience, it isn't a problem. Of course, those outside of the audience can complain to no end.

In short, if the preaching doesn't suit me, then it just isn't for me.
If it hardly suits anyone, then it was a failed speech.
If the anime tanks, it was bad to begin with, not simply because of the preaching.

The title made me think of the preacher in episode 1 - 2 of Attack on Titan.

How about a specific example;

the recent gatchaman was rediculously heavyhanded with it's messaging. That being said, with a few exceptions it also wasn't saying "HEY DO THIS!"

Is that preachy, or not?
