Outlaw Star is my favorite anime and I'd be all for another space opera like that. Maybe one day someone will try to make one again...

You ever see Legend of the Galactic Heroes? That's a classic space opera.
Also they're supposed to be starting on a remake of that this summer.

The late 70's, 80's, and early 90's have a ton of examples.

Banner of the Stars probably my favorite space opera but i doubt they will ever release another anime to continue the story even though there are more books out there.

I started watching it, wow yeah definitely Space Opera, even filled with classical music.

Would you consider Irresponsible Captain Tyler a Space Opera? It was highly comedic but at the same time it also had a similar feeling.

LotGH is one of the best Space Operas in anime, or outside it. Further, Space Operas do have romance. It is an integral part of what makes up a Space Opera.

And while I'm normally an unabashed fan of Gundams, I don't think that Gundams fit the Space Opera definition. ("Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that often emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in outer space, usually involving conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities, weapons and other technology." or "A space opera is a work set in a far future space faring civilization, where the technology is ubiquitous and entirely secondary to the story. It has an epic character to it: The universe is big, there are lots of sprawling civilizations and empires, there are political conflicts and intrigues galore. Frequently it takes place in [a] Standard Sci Fi Setting. In perspective, it is a development of the Planetary Romance that looks beyond the exotic locations that were imagined for the local solar system in early science fiction (which the hard light of science revealed to be barren and lifeless) out into an infinite universe of imagined exotic locations.")

They usually aren't focused on the exploration/extra-solar. While Gundam does have the political and romantic aspects (usually secondary), they don't focus on the whole outer space outside of the orbit of Earth, or at farthest, Jupiter. (Zanscarian Empire/Paptimus Scirocco, also, excepting 00.)

I don't think that any media outside of books really has a lot of Space Opera. For some reason, there just aren't many shows or movies.

I would LOVE more Space Operas! A vastly under-rated genre that hasn't been cliched to death yet!

The very first (or acknowledged as the first) is Macross!

Surprised no one has mentioned that yet!

I would have mentioned Macross, but it falls into the "awkward boy meets girl" trope that xxJing mentioned earlier, which is why I didn't.
