I never understood why in anime, when people are drinking alcohol... they are always blushing. I thought for a long time it was just to show a visualization of the person being drunk.

Then I found out that 30% to 50% of people of Chinese and Japanese ancestry lack the enzymes to properly metabolize alcohol, because of this, Flushing or blushing, occurs on the face, neck, shoulder, and in some cases, the entire body after consumption of alcohol.

This blow my mind. This occurs rarely in Europeans, Africans, or Latin Americans.

Did anyone else not know this? I kind of feel dumb now, lol

A buddy of mine used to get that when he got drunk too... He was just a regular white guy... There are a few people I've seen with that.

I would have to say that I've never seen someone of African descent blush, inebriated or otherwise.

Yeah i have been aware of this for years. some of my Asian buddies get really red when they are drinking but we always thought it was a slight allergic reaction or something. but now i know it is the lack of enzymes. new fun party fact for me i guess lol

Not just Chinese and Japanese. Koreans, too.

I get the flush all over my body, so it's not really a blush per se. After a few beers, I start looking like a Kabuki actor, OTL.

Yah, that happens to me after one drink. And I am a white person. Happens to my mother too. I don't drink very much because I have little tolerance, even though I like wine, beer, etc. I wonder what the percentage of European descended people who have this issue is.

Yeah, I thought it only happened in anime/manga. Usually I can only tell a person is drunk by their eyes, movements, and/or speech.
