Perhaps a direct result of so many people, including myself, downloading instead of purchasing a physical copy? If so, there will be many more closures to come.

When did Steam become so popular? Like seriously, how many indie games and FPS can you possibly play until enough is enough?

have you ever been to steam? they sell more than indie and fps games

Okay, Real Time Strategies and Minecraft clones? Lol.

I got Sonic Generations off of time, I know what they have.

lol the willful ignorance. So you really didn't look at anything on the site. no they have almost all the same games you can get on a console, excluding console exclusives.

If the locations are losing money then yes sure close them that would be the sensible thing. However Gamestop is effectively a pawn shop and those types of business tend to do better in bad economies so it does not seem like the right time to close stores. I get the game plan but basic business knowledge is that you hang on to what is making you money while trying to find something new to make money. You don't just dump it in advance. I would get it if they were selling stores to come up with capital to fund these new ventures but if they are just closing them it seems pointless. Also unless the store is in a mall generally 1 person would be enough to run the store. Upkeep can't be that much compared to other stores.

Yeah, that's a tad bit ignorant of you to say. Steam has pretty much any game you can get on a console while obviously excluding the console exclusives.

I know people who specifically go to Gamestop for their PC games because it's faster to install right off the disk.

GameStop likely has an uncertain future at this point. Traditional gaming consoles probably won't be here several years down the road. Give it a couple or so generations and console gaming will go through changes. XBox One tried changing things up, but people clung to what they are familiar with. PS4 and XBO are consoles, but things could change, such as digital distribution being the only way to get games on consoles and handhelds (much like Steam). Speaking of handhelds, iOS and Android are on the rise and who knows where handhelds will be in the future. Anyway, another way the gaming landscape could change is this gakai thing Sony is invested in.

I think Sony's long term goal is to do away with selling game consoles and just having it be that you can stream gameplay experiences to your TV. Gakai is a gaming streaming service and people think Sony wants to cut out consoles and just offer games to people who have a TV and a game controller. Nintendo, Sony, and MS don't like selling consoles. They eat at costs for years (usually), and sometimes they never profit from them. So imagine being in the video game business but the software you make or regulate is offered to something hundreds of millions already have...people think that is Sony's long term goal.

With the gaming landscape very likely to go through big changes in the next 20 years, where does GameStop fit in? Will they adapt to the changes and thrive, or will they dwindle, like how Blockbuster did when Netflix ripped them apart?

Omg that Nedry quote describes my feelings perfectly.

It's not that a hate PC gamers it's just that I can't stand when some view themselves as some superior being due to their status as a "PC gamer."

I am console peasant per say. But I can get my games from countless other sources i.e. Online or the exchange. Having some GameStops closing is like throwing away an old shirt that I never really cared for

If the stores are closing it's because not enough shoppers care.

Couldn't care less. I used them a long time ago but ordering online is so much more convenient and I can easily match or beat their prices. Even when trading in games I go to Amazon over them.
