I'm serious. I am a huge anime fan but people saying proudly that they are a otaku but the meaning of Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc). It confuses me. Anyone care to explain? Yeah I pretty much fit that description except for the no love life thing but I wouldn't flaunt it.

Not saying anime is bad at all. I am 21 years old I have been watching anime forever and I wouldn't have made it this far without it but I don't understand the word otaku can't we call ourselfs something else? Like anime enthusiast instead since the meaning Otaku isnt a good word to use and kind of messed up to say tread carefully.

I really don't have any social/love life... and I spend all day/night watching anime...

gay is also used a negative term... but I still call myself gay.

Okay was just wondering. Also I thought the meaning Gay ment happy and never thought of it as a bad term to say well I feel bad if I offended anyone saying it. Well I guess it can be depending on what's being said. I'm just rambling now.

Take into consideration the language and cultural gaps. Otaku is a Japanese word. If you are not Japanese, knowing its meaning is a show of knowledge... in a way.

Then you have the whole "own it" mentality.

To quote Tyrion Lannister - "make the name your own, and they can't hurt you with it"

And last off. You should b asking yourself "what do I care what others think of me" instead of "this is an insult and I don't want to be associated with it."

I don't believe anyone thinks the question is rude.

Few put stock in the meaning behind the word. Even in Japan the word has less impact than it chasing the past. Insults kind of drop off in effectiveness over time. Back in Junior High the word gay was a capital offence. By High School people stopped caring and just went with it.

These are words...

Additionally. I have always been angrier about the fact that someone is attempting to hurt me through name calling rather than the name they used specifically.

I get what you're saying though. but I don't really think the term Otaku is extremely negative in a way. It can in general, but It's not much of a threat to people in america. It's originally means geek or nerd, but it generally means a person who's obsessed with Anime and Manga's. In America, Otaku is considered to be a person who's really into Anime's and Manga's. Means geek or nerd still, but actually meant an Anime or Manga fan. But in Japan, same thing kinda, but mainly around the geek and nerd perspective. and it's pretty negative too. It refers to a person who has an unhealthy obsession or a person who's unable to relate reality. Unfortunate enough, You'll often get judged when the word is used. Even towards yourself. People in japan would probably look down on you. In America, using the term Otaku is fine. But if you're in japan right now, I highly recommend to be very careful saying it towards people there. or better yet, not say it at all. Even if you do show off your Otaku pride. But in america, showing it off is all good.

I'm not so sure if the Japanese themselves even take the word Otaku so negatively anymore. There have been documents where the Japanese show us what otakus are with the original geek definition included as well as what it is now for manga culture and promote it. They've also had showings of western otakus in Japan and not in a negative manner.
