I totally agreed.

The fight scene seemed too simple and kinda stupid to me.

Episode 1

So as a newcomer to the series, I wasn't exactly blown away. I know that this show was the pinnacle of magical girl animes so technically it's the original of all magical girl animes so it's kind of hard to criticize this anime.

To me it just felt like I was watching a Saturday morning 4Kids show.

I know this anime is more geared towards the original fans and is running off of nostalgia, so I'm kind of an outsider since I never watched the original.

I have to say though, I love the revamped 90's art style, it looks great. Also I hate Usagi's voice. It's so squeaky and bleh, I just annoys the crap out of me. Also they're all in fucking middle school!?!?!!? They all look like they're 17-18 or even older!

Anyways, I'm sorry if I'm raining on the parade for you fans, so don't mind me since I'm kind of bystander and the show isn't really geared towards older newcomers.

I'm only here to watch a classic get a new makeover and so I can see why it's so adored, but that's about it.

It's a decent start, but there are some problems.

3. The episode is pretty compressed. A lot happens in it, and I think it would have been cool to start with a two-parter.

Not necessarily going to disagree with anything you said or anything but, in all fairness, this episode was only one chapter of the manga. I think that if they'd started the anime with an episode consisting of half a chapter of manga, people would've had issues. Especially since there's only 2 episodes of the show a month.

Incidentally, does anyone know if the 26 episodes are supposed to cover the whole manga, or just half of it? I mean, if they're going to go for 1 chapter an episode, it would basically take them to Sailors Uranus/Neptune, which would be a strange place to end. On the other hand, compressing some of the later story lines to fit into 26 episodes might be tough. Oh well, I guess it will be a year or so before it matters, anyway.

A completely undisguised CGI transformation sequence? Come on Toei.

I was wondering if I was the only one annoyed by Usagi's voice, I'm almost never annoyed by Japanese VAs but multiple characters in this show grated on me severely. I also lack the nostalgia factor, so it looks like this wasn't made for me.

I wasn't annoyed, per say, but I think they should have went with a new voice actress (like the others). Not saying Mrs. Mitsuishi can't deliver, but erm... I think she would have been better as an older character in the new series.

Make way for the new generation, that sort of thing.

They changed Makoto in anime, at least in the dub they did. Every guy she saw it was "he reminds me of my ex-boyfriend...", and she fell in love with guys really fast. She talked about an ex-boyfriend one time in the manga, but that was it.

That was the only thing. Everything else from her cooking skills, friendliness, fighting, personality in general...etc. that was pretty much the same as the manga. As in the manga, she was both the most tomboyish and most feminine of the inner senshi at the same time. Always liked her a lot :D

I liked her a lot too. Can't wait to get her figurine.

Oh, I did an edit to my last post.

Yup, saw that. I hope they keep "that scene and storyline" as well. It is in the manga after all.

Trust me, Usagi's character development is really great, especially in the manga. She becomes so much more mature quite quickly, and incredibly powerful, but never loses her heart or her kindness. There's a reason she's so beloved after all these years

Yay! Sailor Moon is back!

The good:

+Episode pretty much matches the manga's opening chapter. Loved the intro!

+The new art style is clean and vibrant, but will take some getting used to.

The inbetween:

=The music is decent. I'm not too fond of the OP.

The bad:

-Rushed ep? You bet.

-Not too sure I like the watercolor BGs against the digitally colored characters. That made for an odd style clash.

-Am I the only one who noticed Usagi's eyelashes kept disappearing? Come on, Toei. You can do better than this. :/

-Usagi's voice.....yikes. I know Kotono Mitsuishi is her original VA, but damn, that is one cringe-worthy performance. And yeah, Usagi was equally as grating in the original, too....should've gotten Kae Araki instead. Her voice was tolerable.

That's the catch with Sailor Moon, it always starts off slow and then it picks up and you don't realize that you have gotten hooked. Things get interesting later on. This is only the first episode and the first power.

Just finished watching the first episode.

It was strange seeing what was changed from the original anime compared to this one. I was like "Wait, isn't the teacher suppose to be a redhead? Why does it look like every female character is wearing makeup, and why does Umino look exactly the same?"

Nevertheless, I got my nostalgia's fill but I did have a few problems with it.

I guess growing up watching the English dub of the series (which I never finished), I found the voices odd. Usagi's voice wasn't annoying to me; actually I prefer her original anime voice! I don't know. It just sounds slightly off? Like it's too old for her, I guess?

Luna's voice sounds too high. I think her English voice suited her more because it gave her a parental and older-in-a-wise-sort-of-way air about her which I think matches her personality better. Everyone else I couldn't care less about.

The music was another problem. I was never a true fan of the original Japanese background music, but this one sounds to rock-y? Or too "hipster"? I really don't know any other way to describe it. It just didn't fit with what was going on. Also, I don't like the opening nor ending. I think they should have done a remix of the older versions or something like that.

As for the art style, it's slowly growing on me. I really like the water color/hand drawn backgrounds! It reminded me of the original and I thought that was a nice touch! But the character designs makes them seem so much older! Isn't Usagi like 13? She looks at least 17 in the anime. Maybe it's because she looks tall. Who know? But the CGI needs to go. It looks so strange. I don't know who thought that was acceptable to do.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on the first episode.

Episode 1

The first episode was pretty intesting. I haven't watched any of the original Sailor Moon episodes so this is all new to me. I love Usuagi and her clumsyness. I'm looking forward to more SAILORING action.

Sailor Moon Crystal episode 1

Props:
-I am so glad they kept Usagi's original voice actor! The episode would have been awkward without hearing Kotono Mitsuishi's girly teenage voice
- The transformation sequence.
-The opening of the universe.
- The story close to the original manga.
-Usagi's clumsiness and introduction.
-The animation is well-done, origin to its manga style/
-"Moon Prism Power, Make Up". An absolute classic.

Cons:
-They should not have replace Moonlight Legend with the new theme song. The new opening is too 'rock' mental to me and doesn't fit the Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask's love.
-The stiffness in the animation.
-It felt kind of rushed.
-Luna's new voice actor. I'm sorry I just don't like her new voice in this one.

And that's all I have to say about the first episode.

*fangirls and passes out*

Even though the original was a hack-job when we got it over here in the West, I loved it.

The VA for Usagi is like nails-on-chalkboard bad... did they tell her to be as obnoxious as possible? Yikes. lol

Didn't like the music at all, but the show was a big nostalgia trip and that's all that really matters (for now).

I had no idea age was 14...

Also the transformation sequence seems a lot more safe for work.

I've seen all 200 of the original. Moonlight Densetsu was used for the OP song for four seasons. I don't mind the new stuff this is a reboot afterall. I like that it follows the manga. And even if the animation varied in the old openings this is the 1st episode and the 1st opening that we know of. So it's all new animation anyway... I like both versions. I will always like the 90's version, but I'm not going to judge a reboot from the original. Not to mention this isn't a "remake" of the 90's series.

You're not alone in having seen them and trust me I understand what you're saying. What I am trying to get across is that certain traditional items carry over and help make the story what it is in a reboot OR a remake. There's a current trend that all "old" musics need to be dumped from reboots, in some cases that's understandable, but imagine Star Wars, Jaws or James Bond without those signature tunes, and yes I do count Sailor Moon as ranking that high on the pop culture meter. I get wanting to go in a new direction and a new sound being wanted, but you have to admit it is a pretty radical difference in style however if that's what Naoko Takeuchi wants, that's what we get.
