Luna's voice sounds too high. I think her English voice suited her more because it gave her a parental and older-in-a-wise-sort-of-way air about her which I think matches her personality better. Everyone else I couldn't care less about.

While Jill Frappier did a great job, Luna isn't meant to be (or sound like) an old lady. She's a young woman.

Hmmmm......gonna have to get used to some of these voices. And it has nothing to do with me mentally comparing them to their dub voices from decades ago, but rather....well....some of the voices are kind of annoying sounding to me. Like nails on chalkboard annoying.

Beyond that, I enjoyed the episode.

just so you all know, episode one was not rushed, It covered just one chapter of the manga, just ONE chapter.

I've seen all 200 of the original. Moonlight Densetsu was used for the OP song for four seasons. I don't mind the new stuff this is a reboot afterall. I like that it follows the manga. And even if the animation varied in the old openings this is the 1st episode and the 1st opening that we know of. So it's all new animation anyway... I like both versions. I will always like the 90's version, but I'm not going to judge a reboot from the original. Not to mention this isn't a "remake" of the 90's series.

You're not alone in having seen them and trust me I understand what you're saying. What I am trying to get across is that certain traditional items carry over and help make the story what it is in a reboot OR a remake. There's a current trend that all "old" musics need to be dumped from reboots, in some cases that's understandable, but imagine Star Wars, Jaws or James Bond without those signature tunes, and yes I do count Sailor Moon as ranking that high on the pop culture meter. I get wanting to go in a new direction and a new sound being wanted, but you have to admit it is a pretty radical difference in style however if that's what Naoko Takeuchi wants, that's what we get.

oh absolutely I understand, heck most of the original series had that disco beat for henshins. I agree that the music is a big departure. I just feel, for me anyway, that I can't judge it from one episode having seen the other 200 of the original episodes. I know there is alot more to come. Besides, we don't even know if that was just the 1st transformation theme or even if the senshi are all going to have separate transformation themes or just the one theme.

I guess it just surprised me that those who are new fans say that the fighting is dated and it's like they don't get that she's a 14 year old plucked from a regular life. They say look at ALL the stereotypes, but what they don't realize is that Sailor Moon set the stereotypes for all the magical girl series stereotypes. My worry is that the newer viewers are going to have a harder time becoming fans because they don't know or care about its history and are just watching the show for what it is. I guess that's why I get the attempted changes. I mean if we kept it as close as possible they could just buy the remastered series.

Here's to episode 2 and to Amy hopefully upgrading the Mercury computer to a tablet.

Just finished watching the first episode.

It was strange seeing what was changed from the original anime compared to this one. I was like "Wait, isn't the teacher suppose to be a redhead? Why does it look like every female character is wearing makeup, and why does Umino look exactly the same?"

Nevertheless, I got my nostalgia's fill but I did have a few problems with it.

I guess growing up watching the English dub of the series (which I never finished), I found the voices odd. Usagi's voice wasn't annoying to me; actually I prefer her original anime voice! I don't know. It just sounds slightly off? Like it's too old for her, I guess?

Luna's voice sounds too high. I think her English voice suited her more because it gave her a parental and older-in-a-wise-sort-of-way air about her which I think matches her personality better. Everyone else I couldn't care less about.

The music was another problem. I was never a true fan of the original Japanese background music, but this one sounds to rock-y? Or too "hipster"? I really don't know any other way to describe it. It just didn't fit with what was going on. Also, I don't like the opening nor ending. I think they should have done a remix of the older versions or something like that.

As for the art style, it's slowly growing on me. I really like the water color/hand drawn backgrounds! It reminded me of the original and I thought that was a nice touch! But the character designs makes them seem so much older! Isn't Usagi like 13? She looks at least 17 in the anime. Maybe it's because she looks tall. Who know? But the CGI needs to go. It looks so strange. I don't know who thought that was acceptable to do.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on the first episode.

Ever watch season 5 of Sailor Moon? The final season, Sailor Stars? Problem with the English dub (and many other dubs as well) was that they changed dialogue (and by doing so changed the plot), changed genders/orientations of characters, edited scenes, cut out scenes, cut out episodes...Changed names...

I'm not bashing people who like any of the non-Japanese versions...Some were VERY well done like the German dub for example...But a lot of the dubs cut and ripped the story apart.

I always recommend the original anime, because even though it is only very loosely adapted from the manga, it is still the original Sailor Moon anime. I also recommend the manga.

I didn't find Usagi's voice annoying at all. I watched the original version fully (all 200 episodes) and she sounds the same. Not sure what people are complaining about...

Music wasn't great for me, though the opening was catchy, the ending pretty, and the theme when she has her henshin/does her Tiara attack was something I quite liked. But I mean...Nothing will top the amazing music from all 5 seasons of the Japanese anime. I LOVED the music, the openings, endings, backgrounds, transformations, etc. It has some of the best music of any anime to this day.

This is the Shoujo manga style of the 90's. It has been modernized in some ways, and yes, Usagi and the Inners are 14 years old. I like this style personally, I think it is mature, yet graceful and pretty. It is the "Bishoujo-style" of drawing. "Beautiful girls" not "kawaii/cute/moe girls".

And any day I will take them looking older than being moe blobs, or worse - loli's. UGH. I'd rather them look like grown ladies than sexualized little girls under the guise of "cute". Ew.

I really enjoyed this first episode. It feels silly to say but I actually cried near the end there. I'll admit that the way they handled the transformation bothered me a bit (I would've liked it more if it was hand drawn) but I can get use to it. It's a reboot of Sailor Moon entirely not for the 90's anime so I can understand and give the new one some breathing room. I think some fans won't be as understanding though and dislike Sailor Moon Crystal based solely on the fact that is so different from the old Sailor Moon. I've watched the 90's anime countless times and have all the Manga volumes which I also love to death. I just really hope people are patient and give the series some time to grow on them, I really want to see SMC go through all the story arcs.

Episode 1

So as a newcomer to the series, I wasn't exactly blown away. I know that this show was the pinnacle of magical girl animes so technically it's the original of all magical girl animes so it's kind of hard to criticize this anime.

To me it just felt like I was watching a Saturday morning 4Kids show.

I know this anime is more geared towards the original fans and is running off of nostalgia, so I'm kind of an outsider since I never watched the original.

I have to say though, I love the revamped 90's art style, it looks great. Also I hate Usagi's voice. It's so squeaky and bleh, I just annoys the crap out of me. Also they're all in fucking middle school!?!?!!? They all look like they're 17-18 or even older!

Anyways, I'm sorry if I'm raining on the parade for you fans, so don't mind me since I'm kind of bystander and the show isn't really geared towards older newcomers.

I'm only here to watch a classic get a new makeover and so I can see why it's so adored, but that's about it.

Trust me, it starts off slow (I felt the same way when I read the first couple chapters of Sailor Moon) but then the sheer imagination and the amazing storyline kick in, the characters all come together...It just creates this amazing storyline. Especially the final arc of the manga (my favorite - Stars) which becomes this...Well, brutal and tragic cosmic horror story and the sheer SCOPE of what is being implied is just amazing. The original anime's take on this arc is wonderful, but nothing tops the manga.

Give it a while, it'll pick up, I promise.

Again: the artstyle is the "Bishoujo-style" - drawing girls beautiful and mature, not looking like moe blobs, or loli's. (Which I hate personally). I'd rather the characters look older than like loli's any day.

Huh, never knew that. But I still prefer that voice cause like I said it fits her personality to me.

Oh, I know that the English dub (I jumped around the series a lot as a kid because the channel that aired Sailor Moon wasn't provided on my family's new cable network) has issues and changed a lot of things around--I don't live under a rock, lol. I wasn't bashing Sailor Moon Crystal with my little mini-review. I was just rambling out my thoughts, is all.

It's just a little strange remembering my childhood interpretation of Sailor Moon and what little I remember from a couple subbed episodes I watched on Hulu months before and then the remake I saw today.

I understand that the style is "bishoujo," I just like the more "realistic" 90s version. But I do agree with you with having grown-looking girls than sexualized "moe" and "loli" girls so prevalent in anime nowadays. And like I said the style is growing on me slowly.

You seem very passionate about Sailor Moon, but I kindly suggest letting up on people who haven't read the manga (all the way through) and people who like/only seen the English version. I understand everyone's excited and I don't mean to call you out in any sort of way, but can you tone it down just a little? Everyone is going to experience this remake differently. And it'd be nice if others weren't so...abrasive? Which seems like the wrong word.

Like you said, you're not bashing those of us who like the non-original version, but it does come off as a little...superior? Or that you're above us a tiny smidgen? But I don't think you're doing all that on purpose. But it's an impression I picked up nonetheless.

Hopefully that didn't come off as harsh or mean; I don't mean to if I did.

I loved the 1st episode. I watched the 90's version when I was a kid and I was hooked back then and it looks like I will be hooked as an adult now! LOL. I really like the animation - I have never read the manga - so I have no idea how closely they are really following it. Overall I think the 1st episode was a hit - I mean this site practically crashed - haha. The only thing that should have been different is the transformation..I didn't hate it and I didn't love it - it was just okay - but I'm not going to knock down the entire series just because of that. I give it a 5/5 stars - well done! :).

I wasn't too crazy about the first episode... tbh I was bored, but I really like the water color backgrounds and how everyone looks like they do in the manga. I feel like the tone of this series is more serious unlike the original which was more funny.

I also didn't like the music. I feel like it didn't go well with the animation or sailor moon in general. There were some things I liked and some things I don't.
Of course, it's just the first episode so I'm still excited for the rest of the episodes. I'm actually more excited to see the other senshi than anything else.

It didn't feel nostalgic at all for me and yes I watched the original series probably like 5 times. Also, after watching this I realized that Sailor Moon isn't a good anime I watched it when I was younger and it was one of the first animes I watched. Obviously, I've watched many, many animes since then and I can really see that Sailor Moon is lacking lol

I could live with the character designs, but I really didn't like the color scheme and purposefully hand-drawn simple looking backgrounds. I know they were going for something more retro, but I think they went a tad too far since ultimately they need to compete with more modern styled anime. They should be taking way more advantage of HD like the KyoAni, PA works, (etc. etc.), titles out there.

Also I know Japanese people get super attached to certain voices (Goku the middle aged woman), but they should have replaced Kotono Mitsuishi for Usagi. She didn't sound all that amazing 20 years ago, and time hasn't improved very much

I actually really enjoyed the first episode. The animation is very reminiscent of the original manga, and was seemingly a throwback to many of the anime series that Toei Animation has done in the past as well.

As a fan of the manga and original television series, I found the first episode to be a pretty good start and will definitely continue to watch every episode as they are released.

okay I'm going to do what alot of people already done RANT ABOUT THE CGI TRANSFORMATION SENSE

Do i hate it? No. Do i like it? No.

I don't care for it. Yeah it's cool the first time, but I'v always skipped the transformation sense because its so god damn repetitive no matter what style its drawn. I'm happy the cut out some of the attack transformation for her tiara attack. I've always found it ridiculous, "to execute my special attack let me spin three time, throw my weapon in the air, and then end with a leg splits all this while the monster of the day just waits... throw in back flip why don't you?

Okay got side tracked... there but I'v seen some posts with truly utter disgust for the cgi transformation scene that it had "ruined" the anime for them. Like wtf? A not even 30 seconds sense is making you not want to continue the series? It ruined your child hood? blah blah blah

Just a reminder to all that only the first episode aired, we have no idea how the rest of the series is going to turn out till probably after all the inner senshi get introduced.
