I'm both surprised and not surprised. I mean I knew Sailor Moon had a lot of fans, but I didn't know there would be so many. And this is on Nico Nico alone.

Also, those illustrations of Usagi and Sailor Uranus are gorgeous.

We were at the core of the big anime explosion in the late '90s. There's a reason they call us the Sailor Moon Generation.

As for 1,000,000 views in two days, hey, she's still got the power. (Little dub joke for you if anybody remembers it.)

I absolutely loved the first episode. I know the first episode of the original anime wasn't too different from the manga as well, but I actually felt like I was watching the beloved manga. The animation, the dialogue, Usagi's character, all of it was fantastic. I can't wait until the next episode.

I absolutely loved the art style. It has a beautiful color palette, and of course it stays closer to the manga in design, even if it means the Sailor Senshi look more flimsy. I'm on the fence on the CG animations. They're pretty, but it kind of breaks the immersion since it's so different. Overall, I'd say the new series is off to a great start.

On a side note, my 11-year old niece came over to watch Sailor Moon for the first time (me and my GF–her aunt–are long time fans). Like most American girls, she's big on Barbie and Disney Princesses. However, the moment she watched Sailor Moon, she was in complete awe. She even invited her friends over to watch it the next day (without asking us, much to my chagrin), and they were all going crazy about it and are already organizing a slumber party to watch the next episode! I honestly wonder how Sailor Moon didn't become a mainstream success.

But ... it did. Even though it's been off the air for quite a while now, the first anime remains an iconic series, one of the most successful anime to be introduced outside Japan.

Unless you mean appeal to people outside anime / manga fandom. That only happens for Miyazaki films, I suspect.

Well yeah, it's a given that Sailor Moon was a massive success in almost every country it aired in. Even South Korea and China, who are pretty much anti-anything Japanese, went crazy with Sailor Moon fever. From what I've gathered, the franchise made 1.5 billion dollars (!?!?) in its first three years.

The only exception, of course, was the US. It was put in near dead timeslots on the USA Network, from what I remember. Then it was put on Toonami on Cartoon Network, where it gained the majority of its super-dedicated fanbase. I also never saw any Sailor Moon merchandise outside of specialty stores. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks there was pressure put on by Disney and Mattel (Barbie) to prevent Sailor Moon from being big, because they knew the franchise represented a colossal threat to their precious young girl demographic.

Regardless, the Moonies grew up, many of them having kids, and now Sailor Moon may finally get the exposure it deserves. And that thought brings a lot of joy to my heart

I admit, it's a bit surreal that my wife and teenage daughter sat down to watch the Crystal premiere with me, but there it is. Maybe we grew up, but we're still Moonies. *chuckles* So many stories from the old days of anime fandom.

I don't disagree, though; this show will definitely find its audience in the age of streaming video.

Ugh, I'm not loving Usagi's new English dub voice and I don't think it's because of nostalgia from the original dub especially considering how bad it was at times.

I don't know. I think it must just be my dislike for the majority of the English VA's because I heard their voices in almost every English dub I've watched, so I'd hear whatever past character they did instead of the voice for this specific character.

But again, I just don't think Orihime's voice (sorry, don't know the VA's real name) fits Usagi. I get the cutesy-ness but it just doesn't sit well for me. So I might check out the first episode or two, but after that if I want to watch the original anime I'm sticking to the sub.

There is a new dub for the 90's anime coming out this fall.
