hmm...

thought the main villain was tacky, liked the second in command, didn't quite understand the anti-esper unit (are they espers??), and didn't really understand any of the powers of the good espers (precognition)

weird decision to drop us in at the end of an arc, guess they wanted to start with action

lots of head scratching, but I'll continue to watch

ok I got a good chuckle out of the Ga-Rei cameos.

Very X-Men feel to things.
Starting with a glimps at the big finish is a good choice, cause the series has kind of a slow build until humanity finds out Espers exist.

Looking forward to the actual starting point next week

The Anti-Esper group was kind of a nod to Ga-Rei Zero. I doubt very much we will see them again. If you want to see what happens to the you could go watch Ga-Rei.

Actual show characters were the Pre-cog, the Post-cog, the Invisible girl and of course the White Girl who only shows up in the last scene. Couple of others who haven't show up yet.

As I mentioned above the story is actually a slow build, so starting with the Action at the end of the arc is a good choice. Gives people a hint of where the story is going.
With the actual start next week nobody even knows Espers exist. This is an emergance event with the first few espers working in the shadows and rumors and internet gossip floating around. Eventually the world gets a shock that can't be ignored and Espers go public (Those cell phone photos of the White Girl tie into that)

Also there is Yoda

in a panda suit

Whoa whoa whoa. I just watched the first few minutes and why are Gai Rei characters in this? Are the two animes connected? Should I watch Gai Rei Zero before watching this?

Check on the CR support forum. Since I am in the USA, I had to watch it on Funimation.

There's so much happening going on this season.

That's basically the plot summary of this episodes. It starts happening, and then it keeps happening.

Tokyo Ghoul, Akame ga Kill, Zankyou no Terror, Tokyo ESP, Aldnoah.Zero. It's the Summer of Happening.

Needless to say, I'm very happy :3

Edit: AND Yousei Teikoku and Faylan are doing the music. Heck yes. This show gets me quite well.

Despite all this "chaos" going on it felt underwhelming. Fight scenes felt sloppy and the blood at the beginning looked really weird. Don't really know why all this is happening either. It was meh. 2/5

You don't have to but in Ga rei Zero the 1st episode is just like Tokyo Esp's first episode.

I suppose it makes sense to tease us with the intro with the end of arc action, seemed odd dragging it out for the entire episode though... Unless this ends up being a two cour, in which case that'd be kinda nice.

This episode really disappointed me. Introducing the story in the middle of the arc's climax felt really sloppy, and I doubt that people that haven't read the manga at all had ANY idea what was going on (and personally, having not read/watched Ga-Rei, I was extremely confused by the cameos that got focused on). On top of that, I feel like starting the story in the middle of a huge war really kills the scope of it.

Part of what made the manga feel so interesting to me was that it started out very small in scope ("oh hey! We got psychic powers! Let's fight other people who are using their ESP for evil!" with hints of a larger, overarching story being at work), and then exploded when it reached the tanker incident (I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't read the manga). That plot point really drove home that the story wouldn't impact just the small group of main characters, but encompassed at the VERY least all of Tokyo, probably spreading to a much grander scale than even that. By starting the story in the middle of the war for Tokyo, if they reset the story to the beginning of the manga next episode, it's just going to feel really out of place

Still, the animation was really pretty, and I have hopes that the show will get back on track so that I can recommend it to my friends. I'll just make sure to tell them to start with episode 2
