Avril Lavigne irony

I was pretty amused that so many people were trying to find something racist about her video, which was insulting to my ears, but not insulting to Japan.

From my knowledge, Lavigne did a pretty good job of replicating the sort of look and feel of a Harajuku styled video and was very similar to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's song at least visually. I thought the robot dancers were not flattering, but again I don't find it implausible even if it was poor taste as opposed to racist.

What I do find racist is that so many people are quick to judge Japanese culture and Avril for embracing it. To me, this phony outrage is a rebuke of Japan, and that is a larger problem in my opinion. What motives do all these non-Japanese people have for being outraged on behalf of Japanese people who are most likely happy to see their culture embraced by someone from outside Japan? There are so many people looking for opportunities to get offended now, that I don't feel like I can take anyone's hurt feelings seriously now.

What is the motive of these outrage critics? Why are there so many whites, especially women, who are so quick to condemn Avril for this video? I can't help but wonder if this outright rejection is more of a push to keep Asian culture from being promoted in America, and their outright dismissal of Japan is a way of maintaining a white woman cultural supremacy in America. I do think some white women have a latent hate towards Asian women and this may be another symptom of that.

This is an interesting take on the subject. I certainly have not heard anyone else voicing this opinion and I think its thought-provoking. It makes me want to do more research into the subject so I can make an informed opinion and contribute, but I probably shouldn't spend too much time worrying about Avril Lavigne. I'm going to make some uninformed and totally biased comments instead.

First of all, I agree with you that I don't think the video is necessarily racist. I cant say i didn't cringe a few times watching it though. It certainly gives me the feeling that she shouldn't be doing whatever she is doing but I have a hard time condemning her for that. I am not Japanese and I really don't know what should or should not be outrage worthy in a video. What I can say for sure about the video is that I did not like it, but that is purely out of my dislike for the music itself. I'm not going to say its a bad song, because music is different things to different people (and as a musician myself I'd like people to think well of my own material) but I simply do not like the song.

As for the white outrage, I tend to think its less a condemnation on Japanese culture and more about people needing something to feel outraged about. Its difficult to tread lightly enough on racially charged discussions, but it seems to me that the American majority (in this case white america) has a tendency to invent outrage where there is no outrage. I probably feel this way because I am a white american myself.

Like I said, I haven't read too much on the curious case of Avril Lavigne and her Hello Kitty video, but I am going to continue my policy of ignoring articles not written by Japanese citizens, since theirs is the only opinion I care about in this case. I'm surprised I wrote this much since I typically only write once-sentence silliness in the CR forums. I hope that I haven't offended anyone with my post. If I have, I apologize, that was not my intention.

Apparently she has been an admirer of Japanese culture for years now, so maybe she has never grown out of it. Still weeaboo is a bit strong. I think their defining quality is their hatred for their own culture and deification of Japanese culture.

Id say as some one who lives in Japan, 99% of the outrage is from the american media blowing it way out of proportion. The Japanese for the most part are pretty indifferent to this kind of stuff. Most of Japanese pop videos are way more "scandalous" then this tame little video. Not to mention other songs that are "similar" such as Mr Roboto by Styx are pretty well known in japan and either met with indifference or enjoyment.

Either way, the song is really bad and her Japanese is brutal.

Yup, you've covered my view already.
That song and accompanying video are not racially offensive, just musically offensive.
K-K-K-KAWAII....it most certainly is not.

Kind of divided here. See, I've lived in Japan, and maybe, just maybe, she has a stronger fan base there. Avril thinks,
"I need something that will endure me to Japanese fans and keep the gravy train going!" Then she gets TONS of promotion, all the talk shows, etc.. I think it's all about money. At heart, she's no weeaboo...At this point, Asian artists do not have to break into the big time. We vote with our wallets, buy their CD's etc...NOT what is being forced on us here (if we wish). Therefore, Avril is of no consequence to me.

That is the worst thing ever. This has to be her third or fourth sound by now. The song is terribad and the video is gnarly.

I wasn't too surprised at least because of this:

I heard her albums are actually pretty popular in Japan.

Well versed! I second this; it's a tad ridiculous to be offended on behalf of a party that isn't taking any offense themselves.

The fact that I find this particular MV reminiscent of unicorn diarrhea under a kaleidoscope, to the sounds of dying rabbits, is irrelevant.

State your opinion and support it under your own weight. Feigning some civil injustice is a pretty cheap and dirty way to attempt to drive up support for your otherwise insecure thoughts on being disagreed with.
