Only one I can really think of besides the obvious (Grave of the Fireflies) is Now and There, Here and Then.

Not only because of what occurs to most of the characters, but because of how well it destroys everything everyone says they hate about the values of plucky anime characters.

Grave of Fireflies

Attack on Titan (even though that's more dystopia than tragic)

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Grave of Fireflies has to be a clear winner.

There a few obvious ones, but Phantom - Requiem for the Phantom was so... awesome, yet so sad.

Elfen Lied - so beautiful, so sad.

I found them bittersweet.

As for my pick -- obviously-hands-down-without-a-doubt Texhnolyze.

As an honorable mention (besides the others already mentioned) there's also Shiki. I wouldn't call it necessarily depressing though.

Both seasons are on Netflix, if that helps.

none, i hate watching that kind of stuff, i prefer to laugh than to be gloomy.

the closest i get is Attack on Titan lol... i don't understand why people want to be sad. to each his own i guess..

sad,
angel beats is no. 1 (really hits close to home for me)
clanaad and AS.

elfen lied was not sad/tragic for me, more like a dark story where if lucy died it would have be less painful for her.
some how it did not affect me like i thought it would.

something about The Third: the girl with the blue eye, was a bit tragic for me. not really sure why.

tragic:
daphne of the brilliant blue. all she went through, then only to find out every one was dead, and her brother died and she never even knew it was him. the sound track was great for setting the mood as well.

I'm actually thinking of getting the bluray. I recently realized the reason they are so expensive and that they are actually worth that much (meaning that price is actually reasonable)
