So I started watching Hunter x Hunter 2011 a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. This week, though, I tried taking a break from 2011 (in order to avoid catching up) and decided to give 1999 a try. At the moment, it's fair to say that I like the 2011 adaptation more, although some of the extra story/scenes and darker tone in '99 are nice.

There's one thing that is REALLY bothering me though: Why is Killua taller than Gon in the '99 version? Is this how they're portrayed in the manga?
I don't know why this is such a problem for me, but it just BUGS me. Maybe it's because Gon and Killua's friendship is one of my favorite elements in the 2011 series. I feel like it portrays them as equal but different individuals who balance each other out. In the '99 adaptation, seeing the height difference makes me feel almost like Killua is portrayed as an older brother figure or something and...I don't know, it just really BOTHERS me... Although I realize I am probably making a much bigger deal out of this than necessary...

Another thought I had while comparing the two, though: Does anyone else think that HxH 2011 and be compared to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood?
I feel like they have a lot of similarities. Both are adaptations that are more loyal to their manga counterparts. Both are less "dark" in tone than their predecessors (HxH '99 and the first FMA). Also, character designs are different between the older anime and their remakes.

So, yeah. I just wanted to share these thoughts. I guess this thread can be used to discuss any thoughts you have on the topic of HxH and its two adaptations.

Thanks for reading, and if there is already a thread like this on Crunchyroll, feel free to lock this one!

While the 1999 version is what got me into HxH back when I used to watch it on TV in 2002-2003, I would definitely say I prefer the 2011 version. However, for the Greed Island arc, I prefer the OVA, that Nippon Animation made over the 2011 version. For me GI felt rushed at the beginning in the 2011 version.

As for the height difference, yes Killua is actually slightly taller than Gon.

So Killua is taller, then... Guess I'll just have to accept it...

I'm surprised to hear that you liked the OVA version of Greed Island more, though. I haven't reached that part in the older adaptation yet, but from comments I've read in various places, it seemed most people thought the older adaptation did a bad job with Greed Island and that 2011 was better.
Well, in any case, it's interesting to see a point of view different from that of the majority.

I love them both and find them incomparably because they are both great in their own way

i am a bigger fan of the 1999 version. greed ark ova was definately better. the 4th exam was one of my favorite fillers.

i always thought of killua as taller than gon. maybe gon is shorter because of his childish like nature.

i really like the character design as well. but now i am used to the 2011 version so can't complaign about any further.

according to wiki killua is about an inch taller. also, in the manga, the author is not known for his detailed drawings so it might have been like that for all i know. don't read the manga.

The one thing the original has over the new one is that the original showed the Hisoka vs Kurapika fight, that was really awesome. It may or may not have been filler though, I'm not sure.

Yeah like Brotherhood, 2011 is a tighter, more faithful package. Because of that I have to give my vote to that. Although I will say the original is much funnier.

The 2011 version is much better.
In terms of FMA, I prefer the first series because the atmosphere is much more compact and so are the emotional moments.

An inch, huh? In the '99 version, he looks like half a foot taller... (I'm being very nit-picky about this, I know... I guess I'll just have to see the manga version before I can fully accept it. )

And this is just a random question I'm throwing out there: Am I the only one watching both series at the same time? I feel like it's messing with my head a little... Although, it helps that I'm not watching the same arcs in both series at once. (I'm currently on the Chimera Ants arc in 2011 while on the Exam arc in '99.)
Well, I can say that I'm looking forward to the Phantom Troupe arc in the '99 version. I've heard it's darker/more detailed than 2011.

The 2011 version is what really got me into the series. I started the older version forever ago, but only got about a dozen episodes in. I don't know why. It just wasn't as engaging in the first arc as the 2011 version was.

And I know this is nitpicky, but the 2011 version just looks like a million times better. I never did fancy 90s-style anime.

I'll revisit the 1999 version eventually and watch it all the way through, just so I have a full comparison, but as it stands, 2011 wins for me.

I agree with you on the first arc. I actually managed to get 19 episodes in so far, but I'm on what seems to be a filler part of the story and I can never really get into fillers...

What exactly is a filler, by your understanding?

Something that's not in the original source material (in this case, the manga) and/or a bit of story added in to take up time for the manga to get past the anime.

Spoiler for '99:
