Spoiler for '99:

Well, the way I see it, if it adds to the show in some way (like adding more substance in any form), then it's alright. For example, the latest filler episodes in Naruto that add more backstory to some of its characters -- it may be "filler", but it's not something to shun first chance or not something you can't get into just because it's not part of the original story.

Filler episodes can also apply to anything that ultimately serve no purpose, even in original works that aren't adapted from anything. For example, episode nine in Gurren Lagann where they all go to that motel/spa place.

Usually, when filler happens it's because the anime (if adapted from, say, a bi-weekly manga) is getting too close to the source material and needs to create a large enough gap so as not to overrun it. This happened with Gantz in the last five episodes -- though even then I won't call those five episodes "filler" as in serving no purpose because they added more to the story and ended it well enough. What I got out of it was that humans were the worst enemies to face, not any of the aliens they were sent to get rid off/capture/etc.

I'm rambling though.

I agree with you mostly. I guess what I should've said is that I don't usually enjoy filler when it adds nothing to the story. Although, in this particular case, it's probably because I watched 2011 first that I'm being biased. Same thing happened when I watched FMA. (I had seen episode 3 of FMA:B (the one that takes place in Liore) first, then saw the first few episodes of FMA. I found them mostly uninteresting/weird to watch because it seemed like the extra detail was added for nothing. Though, if I had seen them in the opposite order, I probably wouldn't have felt that way.)

The animation and music of the original one felt more serious and less cartoonish. I guess that is what I like better about it. Content-wise they are both great. I like that 2011 doesn't have fillers.

I honestly love both of them since they were made by my favorite manga artist. '99 was surely more dark and serious. While the new one is more fun and action based. They did a great job with keeping the characters personalities. I really like that. SO i guess I'm half and half lol
