Aren't surge protectors built into electronics with 3 prong things? That's what the big ass extension cord all homes with any amount of electronics are for. That's weird. I visited a third world country last year, and they had an extra cable on their electroics, for grounding.

I always unplug my TV, consoles and Desktop, when there's a big lighting storm.

Yes, at least if you're in America, but that's only to protect against things like minor fluctuations in electricity flow and minor power surges, not major things like a direct lightening strike to your house. Something like that would get right through those surge protectors.

Exactly this. I ALWAYS do this whenever there's a lightening storm around, be it a big one or a small one. Unplugging things is the best way to insure that they won't get hit and destroyed by anything like lightening. I'll even unplug things the night before if there's going to be a possible storm during the next day while I'm at work.

Wow, I never knew! Thanks. But, well, lightning rods still exist right? I would buy one for my house if I owned one >_>

Dude i feel your pain, if my 50 inch plasma and gaming pc got fried i would go ape shitXD. Do you live with your parents or are you on your own? If your with your parents have them call the home insurance, they sholuld at least give you a check for half the value of what you lost or better. If you own a house hopefully u have ins and can call.

well you need to make sure it is actually a surge protector and not just a power strip. both have 3 prongs so some people make the mistake and buy a power strip. surge protectors are more expensive than power strips so that might be why.
