I just checked MAL and it says that the first Gintama movie (2010) is a retelling of the Benizakura arc which is apparently episodes 58-61. I'm at episode 56 or something so I want to know if the movie is the same as the arc with better animation or if it changes the story.

Watch both. It's a good arc, worth it.

Are they the same? I don't want to watch both because I have like 200 episodes left. If the movie = episodes 58-61 + better animation/music, I'll just watch that. However, if the stories are different, I may need to watch both.

I like the movie, the story although adapted from epissodes of the show is still very fun to watch and the added scenes were really funny

I highly suggest you don't watch the movie now. Like you said, it's just a retelling of the arc you're about to watch, but in movie quality. What I did was watch all of Gintama (May 12) and I watched the movie several months later (January 14) when I really needed some kind of Gintama fix. And even then it felt like I was just rewatching the episodes in HD.

Benizakura wasn't one of my favorite arcs anyway but there's one that's 10-15 episodes after that.

You should watch the series normally.

I generally don't like true Gintama action arcs to tell you the truth. The comedy episodes are awesome. But because this is primarily a comedy series, that generally means there is very little actual danger in the action arcs, and it kind of feels pointless.

lol that is like saying DBZ deaths are pointless because they can just revive them the next day. Oh wait....that's kinda true >_> Even though when people die in Gintama they don't come back.

wat

that's the first i've heard of someone not liking that part of series... part of the reason i love Gintama so much is because of its action arcs. Since the series is so ridiculously silly, it really makes an impact when there's an emotional/action arc -- cuz then it's like, "what the, this wasn't supposed to make me have feels!"

as for pointless... people die in those arcs, and the characters' pasts makes an impact on how they act.

well to each their own but still

as for OP, well, I'm a huge Gintama fan but I haven't watched the first movie just because I've seen the arc. I probably will one day. But I would suggest going through the series first, then watch the movie. And definitely watch the second one because it's awesome. ^^

I don't particularly like DBZ. I did when I was younger. I prefer more clever animes these days. Gintama's Comedy, Hunter x Hunter's battles, and hell even some of Naruto's drama might fit into that category.

Thanks guys. I'm going to watch the movie instead of episodes 58-61. Since it just has better animation, I don't see why I shouldn't.

It sucks getting the Gintama itch having watched both movies, all the anime, and all the chapters.

Looks like you're all set with answers, so I'm closing this. In the future feel free to take advantage of The Anime Help Thread or Recommend Me an Anime when you're looking for advice or personally-relevant information, since individual personal help threads are against the rules

(BTW, I've been working my way through Gintama, and will soon be at episode 58--I was completely unaware there was a movie also covering that arc; now I know).
