Where I'm from (New England), we have a lot of sub shops and pizzerias that offer much better subs than Subway. Subway is pretty 'bleh' to a lot of us here. I expect in Hawaii it is hard to find an actual good sub. However, in Hawaii, you guys have some great food of your own and it is very distinct compared to the rest of America. Two reasons is the location as a series of islands out in the pacific and the old Hawaiian culture mixing in with some Asian cultures.

I actually dislike a lot of the Hawaiian food to be honest, that only Hawaiian food I like is Poke, Laulau and Kalua Pig. Then again I was originally born in Oklahoma unlike my parents who were both born and raised in Hawaii so I never ate Hawaiian food from birth like my parents. Subway is pretty much the place I eat fast food from but if we were taking sit down restaruants I like to frequent certain Japanese restaruants.

In-N-Out Burger would tie with 5 Guys as my favorite fast food joint.

TGI Fridays and Cafe Rio would tie for my favorite diner or cafe type of place.

How long did you live in Oklahoma? Experience any good BBQ joints and steak houses?

Only six years and I think back then I ate just whatever my mom cooked but I can't remeber because that was a long time ago and then sometimes Burger King or McDonalds. I have tried eating Hawaiian food may times but it doesn't taste good to me so I guess it's just my personal preferences. I do get comments like "what kind of Hawaiian are you?" because I'm 60% Hawaiian but no one can force me to eat something that my I don't like the taste of.

On a side note I wish some of these places did have a location in Hawaii because to my knowledge we don't have In-N-Out Burger, Sonic or TGI Fridays at least not on the island I'm on anyways. I keep seeing commercials for Sonic on TV but they don't have a location here. There used to be a TGI Fridays here but they closed 7 years ago because of financial reasons.

It could just be your tastes, like you said. Does Hawaii have a variety of good Asian restaurants to choose from?

At lot of the Asian Restaurants are way in town which is more than an hour away from home for me but these are some good ones that I've personally ate at: Ramen-Ya, Goma Te Ramen, Hibachi-san, Genki Sushi, Ninja Sushi, Pearl's Korean BBQ. There are a lot of Asian restaruants but when you go into town they get pretty pricey so there's a lot of them that I haven't eaten at because of financial reasons.

I've never been to a ramen shop before or a Korean BBQ restaurant. I sure would like to go to some good ones, though. Sadly, the only ramen I've ever had is the stuff from packages. But in my area, there is a hibachi style restaurant that is quite good and a Japanese restaurant kinda nearby that is pretty good, and there are some good Thai restaurants in my area, as well as a Chinese restaurant that is a cut above the usual Americanized Chinese food places around here.
