What is Super Sentai?
Super Sentai is a Japanese superhero team series created by Toei Company back in 1975.
the"Super" refers to their use of mecha, and "sentai" is the Japanese word for "task force" or, literally, "fighting squadron" and was also a term used for Japanese squadrons in WWII). The shows are of the tokusatsu genre, featuring live action characters and colorful special effects, and are aimed mainly at families. Ever year a new cast take over with a new story, mechs, and powers. As of right now the series is in its 31st anniversary and still going.
Journey to the West.
Super Sentai has been adapted into Western television. One of which is it use as source material for the American series Power Rangers. But believe it or not Sentai has appeared in the U.S. and other countries before the PR series. Super Sentai Series Kagaku Sentai Dynaman was show on the USA Network and on Nickelodeon, 1987-88, but the show was nothing more than crude a parody. Other countries like Brazil were more kind and dub series like Bioman with the only changes being the names. PR of is the more popular adaption. It was created by Haim Saban who wanted to bring the show over as is with dubbing but the excutive behind the production of the show didn't think American children would accept the show with all japanese cast since they would be able to connect to characters who didn't look like them. Thus the show uses a multicultural group. The PR show also have to deal
with the missing time due to scenes removed with Japanese actors. To deal with this character are given powers and abilities for when not in ranger form, special vehicles, and fight scenes that involve losts of wire work. The battlizer was a creation to deal with missing time as well and one (PRSPD) was used in the MagiRanger VS DekaRanger movie.
A Revealing Truth?
Many who grew up with the PR series have found out what the Super Sentai series is. Some see it as a dirty secret hidden from them, while other see as a chance to enjoy Sentai without it being Americanized and watered down. But there is animosity by some Sentai fan toward those who do not know and tend to believe Super Sentai is a quote Japanese version of PR. As such it has cause many rants and arguments to spark on video streaming sites. PR creators have tried to hint their connection to Super Sentai with Power Ranger Dino Thunder episode "Lost and Found in Translation". But this has only angered Sentai fan further due to the fact they not only parodied the Sentai series and made it seem like that series was copying them. But in a later series PROO they did a making of preview in which they referenced GoGo Sentai Boukenger in the proper way by saying they use costume from that show after they're done with the japanese series. They even used Boukenger footage showing the japanese actors.
