I have an extremely expansive memory that is good for a very specific set of things. As a pianist, I can memorize hours of music just by playing it once, and I can easily memorize entire games of go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game) (which can be anywhere from a 100 to 300 moves long). This is just something I have found that I can do. I never practiced to be good at memorizing kinds of these things.

But! I can't easily memorize historical facts, math formulas, poems, or most other things that are useful for school. D:

Slowly, I've been able to work my memory to the point where I can absorb things rather well for things like English, History, and Government. But the point is, I had to practice a crap ton to develop that, whereas I never had to practice to memorize music or go games.

So my question is, do you have amazing memory for only very particular things?

How's your memory?

i remember just about everything from star trek: the next generation

i have a good sense of direction & memory of places I've been. Usually if I've been to a place just once, I can go back without directions, and I'll know more than one way to get there.

other than that, everything else is about average.

I don't really try to memorize things because I find that when I do that, I forget them easily. My mind is rebel like that, I guess. Some information just happen to stick better. I happen to be good with remembering the tiniest, most insignificant details of movies or shows or songs or events. It's really odd. Random facts or trivia that I get from people or TV shows also stick with me very well. People's faces and names on the other hand, forget it.. Lol..

I can memorize a good bit for a few hours, but then my brain just doesn't care anymore and just keeps whatever it finds important. Usually funny images of cats, shortcuts in video games I haven't played in years, and the chorus' of songs I don't like.

On a more "useful" note: I remember historical events, spelling/grammar, and mathematical formulae very well. When it comes to game moves and sheet music, nah.

xD, I have watched all of Startrek... All of it: TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, TAS... kinda regret the last one. Don't remember very much from them though :P.

And you mention another thing I'm good at memorizing, location. Just relative location though. I can't remember the names of streets for the life of me, so whenever I try to give directions it's this jumbled mess of "that place by this other place near the park by that neighborhood with the houses that have grey bricks..." But I can always get there myself just fine

being 26 and after a life full of partying n what not (was fun but damn that stuff really messes u up in the long run psychologically and physically) i have a terrible memory...

its effecting school and my daily life (ouch)....lol i remember when i used to be able to memorize simpsons episodes and movies quotes really well and without adequate sleep hours......

but nowadays sometimes i watch anime episodes that i have already watched and it often seems to be like a new episode even though i've watched it 2 or 3 times already (ouch)

had a really good selective memory, i remember things that i don't want to and things that i do. i used to be able to memorize the order of a deck in less than a half hour.

but my memory is horrible even by normal standards after so many consecutive all nighters for college. in fact, i probably lost alot of skills as well.

the only thing that i had problems with before and even worse now is faces. i remember everyones features, but if you put a bunch of people next to each other with similar features even to lets say a friend. i will have to walk myself through to figure which one is my friend.

I am good at memorizing but then at the same time I'm not. I believe I have a touch of ADD. I'm planning to get tested this summer while I'm off from school. I can memorize stuff very well when I am in the mood. But if my mind is in ADD mode, my thoughts are just everywhere and I can't do a thing. My mind is never in one place usually. I'm always thinking about multiple things at once.

If I work my mind at "solving" something, I remember the vast majority of the contents and how to solve them in one go whether it's math or what else. Otherwise, my memory isn't something I'm proud of.

General's Database. That's a good name for my memory. I can remember a large amount of things from a large variety of subjects. Coincidentally, this makes me good at trivia.

Certain things stick. When I was reading the driver's ed manual to prepare for the written test, I memorized that the gore area is named so due to a term in sewing. Wasn't even trying, and yet I still remember it to this day, years later.

I'm also fairly good at remembering useful things, as well medical terms. So, I have a wide assortment of knowledge.

i have a terrible sense of direction, cannot distinguish between faces, the streets all look the same to me etc... i would however, remember what i choose to remember when it comes to most things. i did have people tell me that i might be dyslexic and well who cares, but i'm one of those people that hardly ever go to hospital or the GP for anything.

I don't remember what I had for dinner tonight. It gets that bad. Yet, if I find it staring me in the face, everything will eventually flood back to me....or a few hours later doing something completely unrelated. Sometimes, I'm not so sure how I got to a certain place during the day, but then again, I usually operate on 1-3hrs. of sleep during the week, that might be a slight contributor to the problem, but highly unlikely.
