I always hear about the large popularity of shows that i have never seen talked about in the forums. How do you guys measure popularity and hype of a show?

When people actually go out of their way to tell everyone that they hate that "popular show" every chance they can get. That's when you know you have a winner.

I'm sorry if i was a bit vague when i asked the question but what i mean is: When you guys want measure the popularity of a show (consciously or unconsciously) How do you do it? For example do you use a forum in which case which forum, do you you measure based on how much you hear of it form friends, do you see how much it sells, do you just see which thing is in the first row of shows on Crunchyroll etc.

You measure the true popularity of a show by how much hate it generates compared to the hype.

1. when ppl talk about it all the time... you can't read a post without seeing the name of that anime... AoT is one of them... i'm kinda tired of seeing the name of this anime.

2. when people use, "Kirito" as their username in real life MMORPGames. there are like 1000's of kirito usernames ever since that anime was released.

I can't log into a game without seeing someone whose username is Kirito... like wtf? is this shenanigan...

I measure it by reading CR anime section that say popularity usually the popular one like Naruto one peace, attack on titan stay on the top. By sometime they get overwhelmed by some min or animes updates and lose their position, but usually they get I back like in 18 hours.

i think for the most part, it's down to how good the first few episode are because i recon most people try a show and if they dislike the first lot of episodes, they'll drop it. Strangely enough, most shows that start out great become shit but by then the audience are loyal to the show (to some extent) and even if they complain... they'd keep hoping it gets better and finally it becomes routine lol. my theory.

I use this site to keep tabs on where the hype is with animated programs in Japan
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-05-04/japan-animation-tv-ranking/april-21-27

Outside of Japan, theres a bunch of more factors to take into account, relatively to the shows available and the time period

ETA: Anime news network also compiled a list of Japans most popular manga in order recently, thats all I got in terms of Japan at least

1. I completely agree on being tired of seeing that name.

2. This is starting to turn into nightmare fuel for me. I actually remember not long ago in... was either GW2 or SWToR... seeing a full SAO guild, all the characters in it had names from the Anime.

At first I was just hoping it was 1 player who happened to have Kirito as the name, which I shrugged off initially, could just be someone who happens to use that name right? Right...?

Wrong.

A few minutes later other players started showing up and it was more names from the anime: Asuna, Klein, Heathcliff, Sachi, etc etc. All in the same guild, which they just named Sword Art. At that point I just cried a little inside.

Well honestly in the end, it just depends what you think but, I notice the more popular it is, the more you hear it talked about on these CR forums or if you try googling something, what comes up first is sometimes the anime. I for example notice Code Geass mentioned like crazy, same with AoT, and SAO vs LG arguments Don't forget fan art, and then fan fictions.

It's getting there...

I don't see a lot of HxH related usernames though. So maybe it's not as inspiring.
