I found both Guilty Crown and Beyond the Boundary had interesting worlds, great art and music but shitty writing and directing.

Kannazuki no Miko had a simple concept seen in other yuri before.

But it took that format and BLAZED and did it better than most.

You know, on the flip from my previous comment, a good example of a worn concept but done expertly is Koi Kaze. You see alot of animes that do the whole Bro/Sis-Con theme. But, rarely do you see it executed in a serious format and taken to its completion. It made for a powerful, if not slightly uncomfortable, anime.

Strawberry Panic! (Well, maybe I just didn't get it back when I first watched it, considering so many other Yuri-ists enjoy it.)
Shingeki no Kyoujin.
Mahou Sensou.
ALO.

I'll leave it at those 4.

......isn't the thread about an Anime that was poorly executed? You sure you want CHIMEKO to be listed here?

NO! HELL NO!

ESPECIALLY, SINCE SOMEONE HERE POSTED ABOUT THE OPPOSITE OF THIS!

A anime with a cliche/andor average setting but was executed WELL!

Oh. Didn't notice that part of the topic. My bad.
Still, too many Anime like that to list. I enjoy my cliches, especially when it comes to Yuri.

It's early, but I'll go with Black Bullet. That show shot its load in the first four episodes. That's what I get for watching yet another light novel adaption. It happens every time with light novel-based anime where the first story arc works well, then pfft. I am giving up on the show knowing how I tend to hate myself for roughing it out on these doodoo fests in the past like with SAO, Accel World, Unbreakable Machine-Doll, Kaze no Stigma.

Light novel adaptions are why I don't read light novels. They always seem like novel settings with poor plot execution. Maybe they are really written by Kdrama writers.

They say it's better to have a cliche concept with good execution than a unique concept with bad execution. What anime did you think had a great concept but was executed poorly? Also, what anime did you think had a generic/cliche concept but was executed well? Discuss.

Great discussion!

One example: Maou? I think that's what it was called. It was about demon queen and hero teaming up or something. It seemed like the greatest concept ever - seemingly overflowing with romantic tension, good comedy moments, etc. However, it was executed like crap. It was like pulling teeth trying to get interested in the show. The writing was horrid and the characters had no depth whatsoever to them. It was awful execution.

I'm really starting to appreciate these types of anime: simple concept but deep roots. An example of this: one piece: I mean really, I started One Piece thinking: "wow, he just wants to be pirate king and it involves the ocean. How can this be 300+ episodes and so popular?" Well, like previously stated, simple concept but deep character development and world exploration.

I thought beyond the boundary was brilliant up until the last two or three episodes. I can understand what you are saying though.

Vividred Operation. The idea of "modernizing" the magical girl theme to work off of advanced technology instead of magic was a fantastic concept. Sadly, it was executed absolutely terribly in terms of being something really innovative or deep. I still enjoyed it a bit, though (Note - i'm aware other magical girl shows have "techno-magic" , but lets face it, its pretty much just ordinary magic. I'm looking at you, Lyrical Nanoha...)

Golden Time. It was a very interesting idea to deal with love and amnesia. This show could have done some very novel things with this premise, but made some very poor choices that caused the whole concept to fail (as far as i'm personally concerned).

Conversely

Kuroko's Basketball Yea, there's a tad bit of originality with the "powers", but at the end of the day, its a rather cliche sports anime. Despite this, the execution of the show is utterly amazing and definitely worth a mention

Yuyushiki A fairly average cute girls doing cute things show. Although it is merely one of many, something about it really seemed to stand out. Perhaps it was the character designs or their interesting interactions. Either way, it was executed marvelously and was rather memorable for being a common concept.

Irregular at Magic High School shot its load after two episodes, then got instantly boring. It was worse than Black Bullet, which at least took four episodes to shoot its load. I've tried to go on with it, but the boredom is painful. There's just too much 'splaining about things that don't really warrant so much 'splaining, like magical sequencing, feelings, class divisions, feelings, wahh, feelings, and on and on, and on and on.

There are three plot crimes that piss me off. Over extended battles (like with DBZ episodes devoted entirely to a power-up), recycled arcs (hero loses to new stronger villian, trains, then wins) and excessive 'splaining (i am really upset that volume 13 of Shingeki no Kjojin just got to the point where it's 'splaining away through 200 pages).
