To be honest, I never have trouble with names, because I'm always thinking of them and looking at baby name sites.

If you're ever stuck for names, feel free to message me and I'll see if I can help!

I had a friend tell me once: to make up a name take one part of two words and combine them.

His example was using Light and Chair. He took the "CH" from chair and the "IGHT" from light to make up the name Chight.

I never succeeded myself with that but thought it might help you. I personal use the randomizer when looking at baby names XD

behindthename.com is a great site to find names on and it has a randomizer as well. I like it because it has the origins of the name as well as what it means.

How about a name that describes the character or that represents him/her? For example, in the game Final Fantasy XIII, the character named "Hope" was named so because he would later on in the game be the character to pull everyone together and motivate them when they are down or lost. He would also be the best medic in the game. Analyze the character and use his/her back story to come up with a name.

Use Google to help you come up with first names and surnames.

The answer to your question is: Yes. I have several 'placeholder' names I use though, so I don't get stuck during brainstorm time, then I go back and add cooler/better names later.

I sometimes have problems deciding on a name. I try to think about what their parents would have named them as that's what is the cultural norm for my characters. E.G. a couple of my characters in one of my story were born into family that has a tradition of theme naming, so I picked a name for the oldest children first and worked my way down which actually left the character in my story with a name that I liked slightly less than her older sister's name, but it seemed logical to me at the time. I don't use this method as much for secondary characters lest I end up having to develop and name several generations of characters that will likely never appear in my story.

I also use placeholder names or nick names while I'm working out their final name.

I have always had problems when I should pick names for characters or anything (I truly fear for the time when I have to name my future children), but I usually find some names by searching at those name sites which are mentioned above

Depending on your genre for which you are writing for. So if I am writing a fantasy I may look up names for that genre such as old english names. For one project I did I booked mark like 10 pages of Japanese, Korean etc, Keep a bookmark for the best sites. You will never run out. ALSO some names have a certain meanings have more character impact, that can make a better character. Some sites although may have a different meaning so u have to cross reference.

few examples: www.20000-names.com

When I don't want to create an unique name, I use a baby name website.

XD I often BS my names. Like uh... and me in my friends current anime project I made a character called "Lakai"... I'm not even sure if that's a real japanese name. I just made it up on spot, lol. I like it tho, so I'm keeping it

You can have place holder names tho, but don't keep it there too long. I unfortunately made that mistake when I created my main character in my most important series. I called him "Johnson"... doesn't sound japanese at all, I'd change it but I've called him that for 10 years... it's hard to change now
