I am curious of what people think about modern anime compared to older anime. I think the animation quality in some ways are getting better but some of the newer anime focuses too much on fan service. I still love modern anime and older anime, Im just stating what I think is happening.

Some shows are better than the shows that came before.

Others are worse than the shows that came before.

If an anime is getting better or worse depends on the show you watched before.

As long as you find one that gets you hooked it will be alright. So I can't really say that it's getting worse. But that's always the case, so much anime out there and so little time.

Its all personal opinion. In my case I like how the animation has improved, but the story has dropped off the lamer end. In recent light though anime is getting better, of course there are those hidden gems that we all wish people knew more about. Overall: Anime is getting better, let time take its toll I guess.

It's been a while since an anime has really touched my soul like a lot of the classics. There are some diamonds in the rough nowadays, but it feels like a lot of anime nowadays are a continual rehash not necessarily of the same story, but of the same elements and the same tropes. I'm kind of ready to see an anime that breaks a lot of rules.
And frankly, I'd be ok with poor animation quality if more was put into the story. Regardless of anything I think any anime that has a better story, regardless of it's budget/animation quality will be recieved better than a high budget series with a flimsy story.

It's hard to say. Of the past year, my favorite anime have been Noragami, Kill La Kill, and Attack on Titan. There are great shows, I'm not disbuting that. But as good as my favorites that came out in years prior...I don't think so. So I'd have to say no, it's not getting better.

Well, that's kind of hard to say. What's getting better is the animation quality and the amount of shows available. What's getting worse is innovative storywriting as lots of the same things are getting recycled.

It's getting better for me

But are you trying to compare it to the old maybe 90s early 00s anime? If so I still think its getting better. If you think about it those anime from the 90s that we call "best of anime" are not really that good after all. For example take a look at cowboy bebop - It has a mediocre story and world building, and a couple of other bothersome things, but people still call this "a masterpiece", to be honest I believe its because it was aired on American TV. That's what makes it special.

I think the authors are already aware on the repetitions going on the animes.
That's why you'll be surprised seeing new animes like Attack on Titans. Forget Godzilla or Mechs. It's all about over-grown humanoids.
Not to mention, there are more leading heroines, more slice of life.

However, there's a saying, "if it's not broken, don't fix it."
Side boobs and sailor uniforms looked appealing even from new animes like Kill La Kill.
